Following on from last year's critically acclaimed debut 'Uncle Lung', Sheelanagig return in May 2007 with 'Baba Yaga's Ball'.

Recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios with Bath-based producer Josh Clark, the new album showcases a band determined to explore the outer limits of acoustic, roots-based music.

The 10 tracks on offer draw on a broad spectrum of influences, ranging from the curious harmony of East European Jazz to the cinematic sounds and twisted rhythms of progressive rock, alongside the familiar gypsy and Celtic leanings of their earlier material. Sheelanagig infuse every tune with a ferocious intensity familiar from the band's legendary live shows.

Opening track 'All Over the Floor' sets the tone with a minimal violin and guitar intro, neatly segueing into a sleazy Latin hip-hop groove as the traditional Russian melody heads towards a blistering ska-fuelled meltdown.

Elsewhere, 'The Canny Man' is a tricky set of three Celtic-inspired original tunes with one traditional melody from Albania, which was taught to the band by Roberto, a music student they met while on tour in Italy.

The gentle sway of 'Al Fresco's Love Temple Waltz' gives way to a frantic Balkan folk-prog freak out nicknamed 'Gargantor'. The track is by some way the loudest and strangest the band has ever produced, and already a live favourite.

Daily Planet banjo player Leon Hunt joins the band on two numbers, 'The Canny Man' and the bhangra-meets-hot-club stomp 'Soup With a Fork'. A former student of Bela Fleck, he has been described by fRoots as "the Jeff Beck of the banjo".

After releasing 'Baba Yaga's Ball' Sheelanagig embark on a hectic summer touring schedule which will take them from the South West to the far North of Scotland, across the Irish Sea to Dublin and as far afield as the South of Italy on the festival circuit. Notable highlights include a slots on the Avalon Stage and Jazz Lounge at the world famous Glastonbury Festival and a spectacular album launch at the Trinity Centre in the band's adopted home town of Bristol.
