Who Gives Kudos:

Thursday, December 08, 2005

We are closing.  Our landlord had neither the obligation nor the interest to give us a new lease when our old lease expired in August.  Since then, we have been fighting a losing battle, trying to buy time, against our eviction.

Unless a miracle were to happen, or the landlord were to have a change of heart, we knew we were going to close.  We just didn't know when.  Now we do.

An agreement has been reached... not to give us a new lease, but to give us time to find a new location.

CBGB is officially closing by October 2006.  No postponements, no court dates, no appeals... that's it.

We are using this time to try and find a new location in New York.

The rumors of us trying to open in Las Vegas and/or elsewhere are true... but not what you may think.  We are staying in New York and we are looking for a space in downtown Manhattan.  We are not moving to Las Vegas or anywhere else.  We are, however, looking at opening up a sister club elsewhere... perhaps a CBGB West.  But the original CBGB, though it will have to move, will remain in New York.

I think that it ruins the memories for cbgb because all the old punk graffiti and stickers, the history of it is huge. It should be a nationally protected landmark, it cannot be stripped of its life stories.

I'll hope for the best, but I have many memories of my youth in the original CBGB's building since 1976.

I will miss the original location greatly, but I will support your decision to open in any location you choose.

Best Wishes, Kitty Hawke

It makes me so angry to think that such a valuable place is being destroyed. CBGB's is one of the great pieces of NY, thanks for keeping that in mind when looking for a new home. Good luck with your future plans!

Not that my band has ever had the chance to play 'THE CLUB', I would just like to say that it sure would've been nice.

Obviously, you're landlord is an IDIOT,who knows nothing of the history through which the club has lived.

To wit, there are few if any bars in the U.S.,nay the world, that has seen the likes of stars that that stage has played host to.

Many childrens' dreams have been to play that space, many dreams will now be lost.

But then again,we could all say a big fuck you to the landlords...........................

My request....on the last night.........BURN THAT FUCKER DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's truly, the only way for it to go. A Pyre........Ever Higher.

Long Live the Dream. For Joey,Johnny,DeeDee,etc..............CBGBs 4 EVER!

ps : If I could have a slot before the end....I'd make it worth the wait.   Crudbal.

I'm sad to see that old place close. I had a lot of good times there.

If you open a CB's west, make sure it isn't too polished. The Knitting Factory's mistake in its Hollywood club I think is that it tried to be too slick and hight tech too fast. Punk is dirty. Music is an oral aesthetic and not a visual one. Keep the music alive.

Thanks for all the great years and all the great music.

this sounds foolish, I know, but I'm not going to believe it's going to close until the day it shuts it's doors

until then, there's always room for as you say "a miracle", and me and my friends will be waiting for it, even if it means handcuffing ourselves to the building

cbgb's can't close, that's just ridiculus

it is the epitome of new york city.

wow. i don't even know what to say even though i've been following the situation. i know about vegas and you should use the name and go for it but talk about not the same! there are too many memories to go into here. i love that place and will make a point of getting there before it closes. fucking nyc isn't the same either. how about berlin? the very best of luck with finding a new spot. i guess the upside is you could really be rock stars and actually make a cooler club. now wait a minute...

Yes I think you should use the name and go for it not only in Vegas but all over the country. There are CBGB supporters. Saint Louis, MO would also be a great place. You might even be able to buy land in the Midwest besides rent. I know it sucks to be evicted for a bunch of crap. We as punks need to start buying land so this kind of crap does not happen.

Libby

If  we own the land we have the power; then we can rent to people and do the evicting instead of the other way around.

Im definately going to have to make a special trip out there. YOu know, there doing the same shit to a club in Atlanta called the Masquerade. I kindof think about the Masquerade as sort of a CBGB's of the SOutheast. Some people just have no respect for sentiment or history.

This is very bad news.  But not as terrible as it could conceivably be.  I hope that things go amazingly well in the new digs.. and I am positive that the legacy will live on in the new location.

Your current "landlord" is going to get his....  don't you worry.  The cosmos has a way of balancing everything out... and that guy's in for it, one of these times, I say.

todays world is a sad place. the meaning of a dollar is more important than the hearts and minds of real people. the club will live on in a new home but will never be the same without the old hallowed walls to surround us with all their beer soaked glory. RIP 315 bowery thanx for the memories

since i first heard the news of CB's closing being "official"...i haven't known what to even say...think...anything. i just know that it makes my entire body feel weak - like it's missing something that it needs to live. my love, my passion, my raw unbridalled emotion for music...as well as that of many, many others...lives in...bleeds through...those walls.

from hardcore shows, to punk shows, to rock shows, and every other show that i've had the privilage of seeing on that historical stage...everything i experienced after stepping through those doors...and a good amount while standing outside them...will live on in memory forever.

when the "all mighty dollar" becomes more important than the heart and soul of music...and the heart and soul of NY as far as i'm concerned...it's a somber, dark day in age.

while i'm still holding out for that miracle...i'm also wishing the best for you all and looking forward to new memories in the new location.

i know the new CB's will live up to the name...but at this point...it's just hard to let go of 315...it's a landmark and should have been treated as such.

my heart's saddened...but hoping for a bright future.

Why nogotiate with landlord for a lease and just buy the location is possible. Instead of Save CBGB change it to Buy CBGB's. Have musician and Fans all over the world either donate or become an investor for the purchase of that property. You can also try finding another property similar to that location. Buy it contingent that the owner would swap locations with you. Just a thought.

Thanks

what a shame.. no other place/venue that i have ever been to.. when you walk into the door every time.. your just blasted by many years of music history. you look at the stage and in the back of your head your like.. thats where some of the most influential bands ever got there start.. its such a sad day... in my opnion this place should be a historical landmark. its not just another open close venue.. its fucking CBGB's... you can open up a new one.. but it wont be the same... go out w/ a blast!

Without going in to details, they tried.  There were some private talks behind closed doors involving many different celebrities and rock stars who tried to help.

Bottom line... the landlord turned them all down.

I live in Wichita, Kansas, and visited NYC only once in my life, in October 2000. Among my top priorities for the trip: a pilgrimage to CBGB. I saw Joey Ramone, Roni Spector, the Independents and a couple other bands that night. Just a few months later, Joey died. Now the bar is closing. I'm glad I answered the door when opportunity knocked. Best of luck.

what would happen if thousands of people protested and chained themselves to the building?you think that that will open the landlords f**king eyes?maybe if we beat him to a pulp, a small bloody mass of skin hanging onto life by a thread. . .maybe then he'll get the picture. . .ormaybe he's just a complete dickheaded asshole that only gives a shit about saving money and doesnt give two fucking shits about how much fucking history took place there.  i was planning on fucking trying to go there at least once in my life but since i'm fucking stuck in the rich ass part of florida and me not being a rich ass, i doubt i'll be able to go to NY. bullshit. . .fucking bull
