I havent played any shows for a month, one glorious month of sitting and not moving. i basically watered my tomatoe and bean plants and slept. a good life. now i have to tour again. to make "money". yeah i put money in quotation marks. the week before i left i spent on an exercise bike or on the computer trying to memorize the words to songs i have played hundreds of times. blarhghh. I go to the hamilton cfl labour day classic, drop off my drunk brother after watching the argos get smoked, take off my jersey and begin, begin driving east.
Day One. Saint John. due to a double booking with god made me funky, which sees me bumped, the show is moved over to col tuckers. a small bar on campus with no bathroom. it is broadcast live over the air. i make the mistake of eating wendys chili before show. the audience is small and divided one half play euchre and never smile or in any way seem to realize that their is a show, the other half laugh and throw stained underwear at the stage. it is a fun time in the end. i go drink with adam and jud and the underewear throwers after the show. they have never heard of pabst.
Day Two. Charolottetown PEI. joel plaskett is playing somewhere else. everyone in town goes there. we have like an audience of 6. yet i sell more merch than i did when i sold out the place. strange. another sad night on the wee island. Day Three Fredericton NB. get into town kinda late. watch the ticats lose on the bartenders laptop. get nervous. then as usual everyone shows up late. super late. a nice mixed crowd. metal heads, drunk profs, angry loners. all together. capital rips up my tab. windom earle drives my van as i am too drunk. i sleep at AV's mansion in chipman NB. eat breakfast in a cafe run by an old man who wants to close so he can go to the fair to look at horses.
Day Four Halifax NS. gus. gus pub. will i ever play another bar again. we have a meatdraw. i give away ribs to a scared girl. there is a ham chant when windom earle plays. i drink to much. lovesinger drives to the show in their giant ambulance. gideons give away a pot roast.there are 200 people there. we rejoice in that for one nigght we are not failures. I spend a few days in halifax recording with dave ewenson and sleeping in his kitchen. record a lets get baked episode. we make soft pretzels.
Show Five. Montreal. my audience again contains only people who have recently moved to montreal. in this case 4 dudes from winnipeg and a guy from nelson bc. continue the long standing tradition of making 40 doallrs the really hard way. eat a bagel for dinner outside the bar. wonder if montreal and i will ever be friends.
Show Six. Kingston. play dan ackroyds mansion. it is a strange place. not sure if the staff likes me. we draw about 20. i am starting to lose faith. audience seems to kinda like it. mostly they like bathroom encores, good thing i do one. stay with jaime and lachie from horses. eat cheesecake for breakfast.
Show Seven. Peterborough. moho. montreal house. i still love you. smaller crowd than normal about 90. but they are ready to party. it turns into a fun night, bill consists of me, sons of thor a metal act, much baker rattlers an old time fiddle band and windom earle my tourmates having a dance party. everyone kills it. the auidence seems to enjoy themselves. and i as always drink too much.
Show Eight. Toronto. show again a bit quiet, we maybe get out 60-80 people. but again good crowd. oshawa people mosh, toronto people get concerned, hamilton people laugh. saw old friends as always. play pretty well. horses are on the bill so i make them carry me on an inner tub. and get to stay at their house. wake up feeling like i have been hit by a truck. body not working. 345 shows to go.
pray for me, BA
