Big Day Out 01/02/08
Big Day Out 01/02/08
Big Day Out
It's pretty exciting.
Firstly started with The Swiss for their distinct brand of funky nouveau disco. Sounding like
Kraftwerk
fronted by Giorgio
Moroder
playing the soundtrack to Dirty Harry at the
Hacienda
.
I was a little dissapointed with the lack of a massive video screen.
and then a little bit of rocket bar in the bowler room.
then a few minutes of Lady
Strangelove
British India were pretty good. they know how to do good guitar pop.
this guy looks vaguely like Alex from Red Riders?
I then saw cut off your hands but
didnt
get any good pictures.
Skeletons were fun as alway
on to Dizzy Rascal where I learned that hip hop fans were subhuman. Apart from the urine icident the performance was pretty good
Wanting to stay away from the mongaloid hoardes of drunken assholes , I decided the best way to do this would be to see instrumental post rockers battles.
I have never seen such controlled chaos. It was a wonderous thing
Montreal's Arcade Fire were impressive. I loved the vast array of instruments from the bullhorn to a minature organ. Rebellion lies was one of the highlights of Big Day Out.
getting in touch with the inner ewok.
Next was UNKLE the only real dissapointment of big day out. Unfortunately James Lavell has made a career of "borrowing"(aka collaborating) others talents. Unfortunately these people are willing to hang with him for maybe a couple of days but not tour with him. Im reasonable I didnt expect Thom Yorke, Josh Homme or Jarvis Cocker. However, I dont think it would have been unreasonable for him to actually atleast attempt to recreate some of the songs from his amazing Psyence Fiction. I had this image in my head of Lyrics Born and Lateef The Truth Speaker rapping over the the sci fi themed track drums of glory with a video of a space ship being destroyed, but it was not to be. There was too much smoke aswell.
Next was bjork. I only stayed until my favourite song , Who is it. I loved her horn section and their dinotopia-esque costumes. Also the use of the lemur touchscreen midi controller( the same used by Daft Punk in their pyramid) and her massive cauldron shaped midi control was particlarly intriguing. Interestingly enough the lemur is only about 5000 dollars. However the other controller is a one of a kind.
LCD Soundsystem were the second highlight for me.They Played all the classic singles from both their albums like Daft Punk is playing at my house and Us v Them.
Nancy Whang
James Murphy
The highlight for me was when they played tribulation, movement and (my personal favourite) yeah.
Pat Mahoney
They take their cowbells very seriously.
And then came the mind bending laser spectacle. which made up for the initial lack of uber video screen.

I think it's only the hair that gives the RRs vibe. And boy-oh-boy doesn't Sam look brilliant in his specs at the congo's.
Also I love the Arcade Fire ones. Really good quality and you were so close! Gotta love a redhead with a concertina.

How awesome are LCD Soundsystem. We saw them last. Stellar end to the day. Tribulations went nuts.
Great Arcade Fire shots, must have been a hot day because I hadn't seen Regine were other than black the whole time they've been here.
