So about a week ago my buddy mike and I were talking about different styles of music and their influences on our playing and musical tastes. Mike and I grew up playing together. He plays the guitar and I play the drums. Mike was always into heavy metal and hard rock, while I was always more into country and alternative rock. In high school we could never see eye to eye on our different musical tastes. However, as we got older we began to understand the importance of not only listening, but also appreciating different genres of music. Mike and I would always talk music. On road trips we would each bring along our i-pod and some of our favorite cd's. We would take turns playing each other our favorite songs and describing what aspect of that song we liked. By doing this I began to appreciate the complicated speed and precision of heavy medal drumming and Mike began to appreciate how a simple accent could change a song. We're still sharing music and both agree an open mind about different types of music can never hurt you, but only improve the particular style you wish to perfect.
