Get ready for Sunday, because we've got a smash-bang scope-out of '60s
MOD in Los Angeles, seen on the big screen with close-ups of Pandora's Box, deVoss and Belinda boutique, The Plush Pup, Gold Star studio, Whisky a Go Go and all the other places you can't really go anymore, in full color, surrounded by bitchen, groovy Go Go teens in their time... and some real-life living version of it with a live performance by The Living Sickness plus Go Go dancers Moana Satana (Lucha Va Voom) and Brandy (Satisfaction club). Yeah, it's a boss flip-out in honor of Rhino Records brand-new
"Where The Action Is: L.A. Nuggets 1965-1968" box set, hosted by yours truly and Rhino's Andrew Sandoval at The Egyptian Theater on Hollywood Boulevard, all day from noon to midnight, three different screenings, for example:
12 noon - Four episodes of "
The Monkees" + an episode of
"Happening '69" featuring The Monkees goofin' off with Paul Revere & the Raiders plus a battle of the bands at the end of the show featuring Cheetah regulars Bluesberry Jam! Monkees songwrither Bobby Hart, Keith Allison (of the Raiders and "Where the Action Is") and Monkees screenwriter Dave Evans will answer audience questions at this show. There will also be giveaway contests at all three screenings from Rhino Records.
4 p.m. matinee -
''60s Promotional Film Potpurri" featuring The Turtles, Sonny & Cher, The Mamas & The Papas and Boyce & Hart, all running around Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Strip during the '60s in fabulous, wild colours. The show kicks off with my 60-image "
Sunset Strip '66" slideshow, this time featuring a live gallery of '60s Pop music makers including Van Dyke Parks, Bill Rinehart of The Leaves and The Merry Go Round, Billy Hinsche of Dino, Desi & Billy, Mark Tulin of The Electric Prunes, Merrel Fankhauser of Merril & The Exiles and Fapardolky all making comments on the pictures while I try to narrate. This'll all be topped off by a screening of
"Mondo Mod" which is nothing more than watching teenagers take over Hollywood... for real... in 1966.
The Living Sickness will perform in The Egyptian Courtyard as soon as this screening ends, flanked by Go Go dancers
Moana Satana and
Brandy... the Courtyard will also feature a bazarr including clothing and record stores (Posers and Fingerprintz already confirmed). (Here is a clip, posted the day after):
and then....
7:30 evening show -
"Riot on Sunset Strip" (starring The Standells, The Chocolate Watchband and The Enemys) and
"The Pad and How To Use It" (featuring The Knickerbockers). Lance Fent, guitarist from The Peanut Butter Conspiracy, played one of the people on the scene in "Riot on Sunset Strip" - he's featured in the movie poster, on the left - will be there to help introduce the film.
