The Miles Between - Deceiver

posted by: Bayonetwork on 3 June 2009

Have no doubts, this is a straight edge band with a message. I hadn't gone through the booklet yet, but when the 42 seconds of the song Redlands were over, there was no more room for other interpretation. Straight Fucking Edge.

It took me a few spins to get into this album. I felt the metalcore that The Miles Between delivers was too generic and had too much mid tempo parts. I just thought I was dealing with a bit more melodic version of Hatebreed. How I was wrong. Yes, the influences are present. But it would be doing tThe Miles Between injustice describing them as a Hatebreed clone. I got led astray by the guitars, they in fact aren't that much of a special thing. The driving force on Deceiver are the dual impact that the drums and the vocals make. Singer Chris has a very clear and heavy voice. It makes you understand the lyrics very easily and you just believe everything he says. Combine that with the skills of drummer Adam, who really defines the directions of the songs. The exponent of these qualities coming together must be the song Death + Its Kingdom.

The achilles heel of this band remains the guitarwork. The cool accents are too few to lift up between the great titans of this genre. Competition is tough, but The Miles Between can become a great concestor in the future. A band like this, with something to say, definitely would deserve it.
