GRENOUER "Presence With War"
Style: Death Metal
Formed in 1992, in the heart of the Western Ural Mountain Range of Russia, life for Grenouer began as a Brutal Death Metal outfit. And following the usual array of demos, the band were hauled into Moscow to record their debut 'Border of Misty Times'. Three full lengths followed and proved equally succesfull, and having evolved from the death metal formula to a redefined and hard to categorise original take on the genre. The band released last year their fifth album ' TRY' which was a re-release of album number four to a world wide market and is available for the first time outside their native Russia. The band are currently signed to the Spanish label Locomotive. This is their 6th album, or actually their fifth, but anyway their latest effort, and should appeal to fans of Meshuggah, Pantera, Faith No More, Clawfinger according to the info. After a short military intro 'Mercenary Fields' sets in, a good and heavy song, with grunting vocals and a very good and heavy production. Grenouer delivers a good album overall, but the only bad thing they better had left out, is the Recoiler Remix of 'Clonetwigs'. Instead they better had put a song like 'Sex Optica' on it, nice up tempo and heavy. The lyrics handle mostly about army life and war as far as I understand it, and the album sounds really groovy, not the most original sound, but then again who is these days. Some real heavy songs like 'Clonetwigs' (the original, NOT the remix) or 'The Choice Of Flesh' make the album a good average metal album, also through the heavy production. No real surprises, except for a negative one in the form of the mentioned remix, also 'A Farewell To Arms' isn't a real song but more of an outro, after which you better stop listening, for the only thing left is the remix, and it brings the album down.

GRENOUER "Presence With War" CD
Russian death metal and even though the title are in English, they could actually be singing in Russian for all I know for all anyone knows come to that for the vocal is that sort of throaty roar which can only come of years of hard drinking or someone standing on the thing. The really odd part about this is that it really is so unintelligible, that it becomes seriously hypnotic and with the punishing pace, heavy metal guitar riffing and some ferocious lead guitar work, it's the musical equivalent of the rabbit in the headlights job. What makes this a thoroughly recommended death metal abum, more than anything, is that they've somehow managed to inject melody into it all or at least the feel of melody for you're never once feeling that it's all too overwhelming or overblown, as you positively absorb every one of the 10 storm force tracks. There's also a great sense of dynamics at work within the massive nuclear powered structure, and all these things combine to make this an, albeit scary at times, intense metal maelstrom that you really should experience.

GRENOUER - Presence with War

Grenouer - Presence With War

Grenouer - death-metal

GRENOUER - "Presence With War"

METAL FANATIX

GRENOUER - Presence With War

Hailing from Russia is the band Grenouer. Pinpointing exactly what they sound like on their CD “Presence With War” can prove to be difficult. It’s somewhere within the likes of Pro-Pain, Machine Head or Pantera with death metal elements, and for some reason I want to say Helmet influences as well. Their death/thrashy sound is not quite defined on this disc. It’s a little bit of a confused sound…like the band wasn’t sure what direction they wanted to go in. However, there are lots of catchy thrash/death riffs on the thirty-eight minutes and nine songs. The solid guitar riffing prevails throughout this album. It has this explosive sound, but getting it a little tighter wouldn’t hurt. Also, some riffs seem like filler because they aren’t nearly as appealing as the good riffs around them. My favorite part is probably the vocals. The guttural death vocals Ind uses sound like he’s gargling with broken glass and rock salt. Awesome!! Mickmo who works for the comic book industry created the cover and it fits this album well. Genouer recorded “Presence With War” in Moscow, Russia and mastered it at well-known Finnvox Studio in Finland. Not bad, but there is room for improvement.

METAL HUNTER

GRENOUER - Presence With War

Grenouer are a thrash metal group located in Russia. Their 4th album, Presence with war, is a fine work of heavy thrash in the way great establishers of thrash showed, like Testament and Slayer.
The album incorporates exclusively brutal vocals, punchy - in your face sound and playing, and is developed around the theme of war and it's tragic consequences. We can certainly say that Grenouer manages to create a very morbid, terrifying and inhospitable environment, like the one that exists into a battlefield, where the soldiers don't know if they will make it out alive or into a coffin, and so they struggle to remain alive... Similarly, the listener becomes a subject of intense expectation for the ending of each track, when the power of the music ceases and he can rest until the next track starts.

It is worth noting that there also some electro elements in the music of the band, especially in the last track of the record, which add up to the atmosphere we mentioned earlier, and in some point gives an idea about how this terrible machine that war is based upon, might sound like.
As a conclusion, I can absolutely state that Presence with war is a well made, energetic, full of rage album, that surely shows that these guys from Russia know
how to play heavy music without losing the meening. Check it out. ;-)

GRENOUER - Presence With War

Coming directly from Russia this band shows soon that they deserve ta place in the top names of death metal style. Their music si extremely aggressive with a combiantion of thrash rhythms with deathly vocals and including even more brutal parts that give a definite death metal feeling to the music. I have to remark the originality of the guitar riffs that make the tunes really memorable and interact cleverly with vocals and rhythm section, such as in the great "The Last Bullet Magic", a tune that is destined to be a death metal classic in the vein of the most extreme Entombed. The rhythm section  is extremely tight and I like a lot the double bass drumming that many of the compositions here have. The songs are memorable and extremely aggressive including even some blast beats and ultra fast parts but combined with slower yet heavier ones. the sound of the recording is clear and loud and enhances the performance of this killer band. If you like extreme music you must buy this one.

Grenouer - Presence with War
Aug., 2004
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Night of the Realm

It has taken four albums under their belt, but it looks to me like Russian death metallers Grenouer have broken out of their homeland and reached across the sea. Despite being active since 1992, Grenouer has remained unknown to me until their latest release, PRESENCE WITH WAR arrived in my mailbox.

Searching back through the band’s discography, it would appear that Grenouer have evolved from a death-gore band in the early 90s into more of a technical death metal band. The nine songs here on PRESENCE OF WAR are not your straight-up brutal death metal, but rather the mid-paced variety with a strong groove, a touch of thrashiness, and a thick wall of sound kind of feel to it. The end result is not unlike that style played by Obliveon, Cryptopsy, or even some Bolt Thrower.

I really do not have a lot to say about this album, actually. Unfortunately, the CD I received will not play in any of my CD players, and it crashes my computer whenever I try to load it. Perhaps this is a manufacturing defect, or because it is a Russian CD, though I have never had that issue before. In any case, the only time I can listen to this album is in my truck stereo. At least it makes for some good driving music. Fans of technical/progressive death metal will certainly enjoy it.

GRENOUER - Presence With War

A Farewel to... Death Metal
Rating: 70%

Why is this album definitely good? ‘Cause it is well done. Why is this album fairly bad? ‘Cause it is far from exciting. All of 8 songs of Presence With War sound like a standard death metal band’s album about a war. Bolt Thrower and Benediction will be the right comparison. Oh no, there’s something not standard about Grenouer’s death metal, it is has some hardcore which is also suitable for war themes. This or that way if you dislike slow death metal riffs and you are into grinding and terrific blastbeats then switch to another review. Go on if you don’t mind something heavy, solid and easy to understand. Label it like boring.
In fact Grenouer show good musical skills and experience and they don’t rush into things. War machine crawls down to peaceful villages and town and then tramples them down. The sound of the album is thick and intentionally (I am sure) monotonous, industrialized and memorable. The songs have appropriate titles like CRASH CRASH CRASH or THE LAST BULLET MAGIC. The artwork is not a bloody massacre, here’s a Monster wearing gas mask, good idea. The thing one should keep in mind is that this is Grenouer’s farewell to death metal, since the band has already moved somewhere else, but this is not a farewell to arms of course. Presence With War sounds solid enough but I personally would surely get depressed by the idea of listening to Presence With War pt. 2 and fortunately this is not going to happen just because Grenouer next CD Try kicks ass with plenty of experiments, breath taking ideas and elaborated melodies.

GRENOUER - "Presence With War"

Rating: 3/4
Reviewed by Christopher J. Kelter

Grenouer hail from the Siberian region of Russia and play an accessible version of what they describe as techno death metal.' Since we at Rough Edge don't hear much from the Russian metal scene I could only guess that Grenouer were a new band; however, I was surprised to learn that Grenouer have a history dating back to the mid-90s with a pretty consistent recording history. "Presence With War" is Grenouer's fourth full-length album -- it's obvious these guys are no strangers to a recording studio.

Grenouer don't necessarily present anything new with "Presence With War" except to say that they seem very comfortable with what they do and seem to be very consistent with their delivery. And what Grenouer does is play a very accessible version of mid-paced death metal with elements of industrial and techno.

"Presence With War" was produced, mixed, and engineered by Arkady Navajo and mastered at the world famous Finnvox Studios by Mika Jussila.

Grenouer - Presence With War
Kategorie: Death Metal

Na ja, was solls, genug gelabert. The choice of flesh" gehen gut ins Gehirn. Weiter so.

Grenouer - Presence With War
File under Speed / Thrash metal

Grenouer - Presence With WarRichard G.: After last year’s extremely successful European debut ‘Lifelong Days’ via Locomotive Records, the Russian industrial thrash outfit Grenouer has quickly risen to fame, reigning both fiercely and proudly at the top of the international metal scene. By making available Grenouer’s 2004 effort ‘Presence With War’, the British label Casket Music cunningly steps in to fill the ever growing demand for old Grenouer material. And they all lived happily ever after.

Because apart from a quartet of Russian babushkas, there is virtually no-one out there who has actually listened to ‘Lifelong Days’ and remembered the record and/or band after that. Let alone that someone would be interested in some of the older (or should I say practically ancient) Grenouer stuff. Especially when it is such lifeless midtempo thrash with a sound that lies somewhere between the worst records of Fear Factory and Prong. To cut a long story short: Grenouer was not interesting in 2004, not in 2008 and probably never will be. Yet another (re-)release that you can happily ignore.

GRENOUER – Precense with war

Mal schau'n was die Zukunft bringt.

ZWARE METALEN

http://www.zwaremetalen.com/recensie/12778/Grenouer-Presence-With-War.html

Grenouer - Presence With War

Jippie!

FINAL GORATORIUM

http://finalgoratorium.narod.ru/reviews/g/grenouer04.htm

GRENOUER - Presence With War

Finnvox.
Даже гуттурал (трек "The Choice Of Flesh") встречается!

Grenouer - Presence With Wa

Some kind of polyrhythmic growling groove-edged thrash out from Saint Petersburg, Russia. One of the better metal albums we’ve encountered this week, that’s not saying much though, lot of unremarkable metal being released right now. Grenouer have a little bit of an edge to their relentless onslaught, seems this is a re-issue of their 2003 album, available for the first time outside Russia

POWERMETAL

http://powermetal.de/review/review-Grenouer/Presence_Of_War,5995.html

Eindimensionale Breaks trotz hörbarer Ambitionen und zunehmender Drum-Variationen kennzeichnen das komplett unmagische 'The Last Bullet Magic'.
'Crash Crash Crash': Kracht es nun endlich richtig? Doch was passiert?

GRENOUER - Presence with War

This was metal played with a thrash edge to it at times. The vocals, they were gruffy and I didn't care for them much. The music kinda just stays at a mid placed level and after a few tunes they kinda just blurred. This was sort of like Six Feet Under minus the cookie vocals

CONCRETE WEB

Band: Grenouer
Album title: Presence With War
Label: Casket Music
Distributor: Copro - PHD
Release date: 09/02/2009
Release: Re-issue CD

No, no, no…this ain’t no new album by this great Russian (St. Petersburg based) Industrial/ Death Metal band…and for the release of their most recent studio album (2008’s Lifelong Days) the guys chose to go with the Locomotive label, in spite of the fact that Casket Music/ Copro wasbraveenoughto re-issue the band’s early 2007 release Try (originally issued in Russia only through the Moon Records label)!
Those among you having read my review of the European release (also through Casket Music/ Copro) of the band’s Try album (posted 24/02/2008), may remember that Presence With War was really the band’s 4th full-length release, originally issued in early 2004. By the way, if you’re new to the band and looking for info on ‘em (or want to refresh your knowledge on the subject), that review (with quite a detailed history-of-the-band) is still available for your scrutiny. Back in the days, the Presence With War album was the cause for the band to move from their original homebase Perm to St.Petersburg back in late 2003, to be closer to the infamous Finnvox Studios, where they wanted the album to be mastered.
Seen as the band has had quite high praise for both the Try and Lifelong Days albums from media and fans alike, Casket Music must’ve felt it would be a good idea to re-issue Presence With War as well, as it closes in quite well stylistically with the albums which would follow it. Those not familiar with the band yet may wanna know that Grenouer creates, or used to create, singularly catchy songs by bringing in elements of Groov Metal, Hardcore, and Rock on a Death metal template. In the days of Presence With War, the band definitely still was in a less “complex” mood than they would become on the Lifelong Days album (which we were never sent as promo, but which I díd buy after all), but the resemblance to the Try album is rather striking!
As I said above, If you’ve already come across the band’s music through either Try or Lifelong Days, you already have a good idea of what to expect here. Those not familiar with the band may wanna check out what’s posted at myspace.com/grenouer. In combination with what can be heard on their own website (www.)grenouer.com, that’ll give you 4 tracks off Lifelong Days, and one off Try…enough to get you on the right track of what the band are about! By the way, the re-issue of the Presence With War album has the distinct advantage of featuring a bonus track in the “Recoiler Remix” version of album track “Clonetigs”. Opening with rather Industrial leanings thanks to the use of a synth intro, the rest of the track is quite recorgizable, simply getting some synth lines on top (hey, as far as I can assertain, you know, I’m not a sound engineer)! Réal nice stuff, this album…and I simply lóve that kind of remix things, and I wouldn’t ‘ve minded more extras of the kind! Either way….hence the high rating…but since this IS a re-issue, I can hardly nomonate Presence With War into my year-lists, right?

SOLID ROCK

Grenouer - "Presence With War" (Casket)

Grenouer is a band from St. Petersburg that has released 6 (!) studio albums with more recent, last year’s “Lifelong Days”. Before that release, Casket records had re-issued 2007’s “Try” world wide and does the same, now, for “Presence With War”.
This album came out in 2004 with a clear, antiwar subject, especially to those who try to find reason from it. What is, definitely, without any reason is calling this act thrash / death metal since they just pick up things and leave. Don’t be surprised if you find similarities to their “Lifelong…” album that was named ‘industrial metal’ (not a chance)! Grenouer, five years ago, played solid and groovy with some good riffs but less ‘electronics’, compared to nowadays, and kind of rougher voice.
“Presence With War” is plane in all tracks, there are no distinguishable tracks but you won’t feel the need to break the CD. The decent, hard working and earnest fellows of the old UEFA Cup winner, Zenith, might do their miracle some time. We’ll be around…
P.S.: The electronic remix that tries to convince about Grenouer’s turn to industrial and is used as a bonus at the end of the album is pretty funny…
