Who Gives Kudos:

December 12, 2008 - Friday
I had to leave the sunny Hawaii weather for a couple days an head back to Quantico, VA. While I was there, I has a chance to visit the National Marine Corps Museum which is just outside the front gate of Marine Corps Base Quantico. I had heard so much about it so I had to check it out. I took my video camera along with me and filmed some interesting displays. I threw some of the clips I filmed of the displays and presentations into a video. I know there is already a slideshow video for On My Watch Tonight but it seemed the right song to use as the backdrop so please pardon the redundancy. Some of the exhibits in there were amazing. There is one clip at the end of the video that I left the sound on for. In the "Making Marines" exhibit, it takes you from the yellow footprints all the way through basic training. The last clip of the video was taken in a display that replicates getting your ass chewed out by drill instructors. You step into this thing kind of like a telephone booth. There are two speakers on the left and right at ear level. Once you step in, you see the picture in the clip then all of a sudden, the yelling starts and he drill instructors lay into you. Its trip. there is another display on Vietnam. To get to it, you go into the body of a helicopter, as you step out the back of it, the air is 20 degrees warmer than any other exhibit and humid. It is something you just have to see to get the whole feel. There's a bar/pub on the second floor called Tun Tavern. Tun Tavern is where the Marine Corps started, who'd a thunk it, Marines in a bar. Anyhow, I wanted to share some of these pictures an video clips with you. If you're ever in the area, stop by and see it. It's free too. The day was also special for me in that it was the 16th year to the date I was commissioned, something I will always remember. This is not any type of propaganda or official endorsement, I just thought it was pretty cool and thought I'd share it. I hope you all are well and have a great holiday and healthy and happy new year. Mke

Now just how cool is that? Your song is very fitting for the video. But then, the first time I ever heard it, besides crying my eyes out, I could only wish that my father could've been around to hear it because "On My Watch" epitomizes The Corps as I grew up knowing it. Thank you Mike for all that you do. Merry Christmas.

Mike, I want to share with you how important this song has become to me and how appreciative I am that you do what you do to share all of this with us. I have recently made the decision to attempt to be an officer of Marines. I will begin my process in the New Year and hope to find myself in OCC in May. My husband is a former Marine and is now serving with the Army and intends to end his military career at the end of this term, thus my decision to serve. I have a huge passion for the Marine Corps and feel that it has always been my calling, so I hope I haven't missed my chance at my slow realization. This song motivates me immensely and gives me a huge batch of encouragement every time I hear it. I listen to it when I run, something I despise, so that it gives me the extra strength to continue. The line, "Where I was broke down and built up and reborn a fighting man," was a line that had a huge impact on my decision to do this, as I feel that everyone needs to be broke down and rebuilt and I welcome that opportunity in my life and can't wait to be reborn. I know that being broken down won't be pretty, but I am not afraid of undergoing the rigorous and brutal procedure of being rebuilt as a Marine. I only fear failure or giving all I have, only to find I fall short.

Please continue to be moved to write more songs like this that can give those of us who are military-specific the encouragement and support we thrive on to do this. Seriously, I really, truly cannot express how important this song is to me. It will forever be embedded in the foundation on which I one day hope to firmly stand.

Thank you for the video, as well! I would love to make it up to Quantico before I'm actually privileged to be sent, but I don't think I will find the opportunity. And thank you for finding ways to be Marine Corps-specific, as I think there needs to be more of that instead of generalizing everyone to be "soldiers.
"

Please keep up your continued awesomeness to serve us still with your music, and thank you for being one of the few and the proud, and all of the service you put forth for our country.

That's a great video. I can't listen to that song without tearing up. It brings back my husbands deployments. We are currently stationed at PI, so that adds a whole new meaning to the song. Thank you.

Nice video. I love that song.

Rob and I went to the museum last year.. that place is amazing!! It really takes longer than a day to see and read everything. I loved how they were able to make displays for "non" marines or military to have a glimpse of what it was like for all the veterns before us. My dad was with us when we went and the Vietnam display hit home. I will never fully understand what he went thru but that day... brought us a bit closer.

One of our friends was in the huge wall pic of the DI's at the pull ups. That was pretty neat to see someone you knew on that big wall. Again, Thank you for sharing.
God bless!!
