in other news i want to say a big THANKYOU to Keith Armitage of Songwriters Live and the folks at the Harbord Hotel who put on a songwriting competition that i've been secretly going to and singing at for the past month or so. Last week they were nice enough to award me as the winner of this comp and along with some nice words they gave me an awesome prize! Sometime next year i'll be taking that prize (a holiday for 2 to the Whitsundays. Oh. My. God.) and tomorrow i'll be heading to the bank to cash the rest of the prize ($1000... geez!)
i wanted to mention this obviously to say thankyou and recognise these people for supporting and nurturing local and emerging talent - but also because i've decided the $1000 prize money will be going towards a big trip i'm taking next year that is very close to my heart. A little while ago i decided to visit Malaysian Borneo in May of next year to volunteer in an Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre for a month. The place i'll be working with rescues and rehabilitates orphaned and injured Orangutans from the illegal pet trade and areas surrounding their natural forest habitat - which, by the time they get rescued, has been cut down to make way for Palm Oil plantations. This is a huge issue and has meant that in recent times the population of the wild Orangutan has rapidly declined and they are now facing extinction.
So, i'm in the process of learning more about this problem and ways that i can make a difference here at home - which as time goes by i might tell you a bit about too - but in the meantime i am working and saving, working and saving and organising a few exciting little fundraising projects to help get me out there next year and be part of the solution.. so i'll tell you more about those soon!
Until then, i guess i'll be seeing you at a show eh? Yeeha! XoSam
