Mike
Garson and Danny Holt's musical partnership shows that eclectic
music-makers can work across generational divides and beyond rigid
genre distinctions to always find something new, fresh, and exciting.
Garson is a genre-bursting musical figure who is well-known for his
work with David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, and others—but he is also a
composer and improviser whose work is increasingly gaining attention of
those in the jazz and classical worlds (and more importantly, by those
who don't see the need to define their listening by these old fashioned
categories!) Holt is one of a young generation of classically-trained
musicians influenced as much by jazz, rock, pop, and non-western music
as by the classical tradition. Both pianists are known for their
intense virtuosity and riveting performances. They collaborated on
Holt's 2009 release, Fast Jump, and plan to record a CD of Garson's solo piano works in 2010.
Danny
Holt will warm things up with a preview of an upcoming concert: groovy,
virtuosic British minimalism by Graham Fitkin; Karen Tanaka's "Techno
Etudes"; Christopher O'Riley's transcriptions of Radiohead songs; and a
suite of Mike Garon's eclectic "NOW Music" pieces.
Then, when Mike Garson takes the stage, anything can happen...!
The
G-Spot is one of L.A.’s most beautiful, intimate venues—a magical place
to experience live music up close and personal in a laid-back
atmosphere. The recent acquisition of a Bechstein concert grant piano
makes it even more enticing for both pianists and audiences alike.
