So I just got back from an amazing adventure in China. Walking along the Great Wall, standing next to the Terracotta Warriors, seeing the lights of Shanghai..... all these things I had already expected to do and knew they were going to be memorable. What I didn't expect though, is to be inspired by the culture in China in regards to dancing. Every city that I went to had a town square that was filled with people dancing every night! With a loud speaker playing Chinese and sometimes Indian music, groups of women and men would gather to spend their free time dancing. Some women would just free-form dance by themselves while you would also see couples waltzing with smiles on their faces. Dance seems to have almost replaced the prominence of tai-chi as one of the more popular forms of exercise by the masses in China. The attitude among the dancers is great, young or old, graceful or not, anyone could join the dance without fear of judgment from the others. While we Americans seem to import so much from the Chinese already, hopefully we can also start importing their inspirational attitudes about dance, dance is happiness, dance is for everyone, dance is part of you, part of your body and your self-expression, dance is something one's soul needs no matter your age or training, dance brings people together, and dance can bring families and whole communities together with smiles and spinning.....
