The Jewel Case

Live review

Beat:

The latestaddition to the enviable Chapter Music roster sits comfortably somewhere between Sonic Youth, early Magic Dirt and a host ofAustralian groups from the early to mid ‘90s. In saying that,Adelaide-based Hit the Jackpot never succumb to being merelyderivative or a product of their influences. The lyrical twee-nessof album opener “and that’s when he splashed me/The king of thepool” contrasts well against the following track Eye with its Kim Gordonesque vocals and distortion-drenched guitars.

The bandthemselves note that they value concept and ideas over technical proficiency, the hallmarks of a decent noise group. Hit The Jackpotinstead trade the characteristic atonality of noise, for a prominentpop sensibility, a nice trade for all. Most of the songs areridiculously catchy in a stripped back fuzzed-out noisy pop waywithout the lofty pretensions that other groups with similar artydo it-yourself ideals have. The swapping around of vocals andinstruments enhance the sound as a whole, giving the album another layer to produce something that ultimately sounds quiteAustralian and proudly so

SHANNON CARLSON....

Mag:

Adelaide three piece Hit the Jackpot have produced a lo-fi record of rare
quality here, pushinq the vocals into a shallow qrave that allows the pop
fuzz guitar sound to lead the show. What I like about this eflort is that
they never let the style overwhelm the songs, gìving the sound and vocals
enough menace to create some mystery while allowinq enough space for
lìsteners to connect. There is no pretence that the songs are perfect
(although Fireplace comes close). You can sense the adventure behind the
nonchalance and sometimes that is enough to tip the balance.
