"An Appointment with Dr. Bosch"

Lost in the gray twisting paths
Of a consciousness consumed by slow rotting fungi
Will this abandoned soul ever return
To the loved ones it left behind?

There is a door.
A quick (slow) turn of the head
Reveals nothing but simple (warped) sheetrock...
Absence

A harmless creature (beast)
Looks on with piercing yellow eyes,
Looking through windows into the pits of a personal sun...
Conduit

From an iridescent box
A girl in blue liquidates onto the shifting road before unblinking eyes
Leaving nothing but the faded remnant of her innocence
Making the observer of this procession of confusion long for his own wide-eyed purity

Will tranquility ever be mine again?
Will I ever return to that which is familiar?
Will this forever evolving innerspace be my dwelling forever?
I no longer desire to be disembodied this way

A silent scream
A clenched fist

Home has never been farther away

Thanks, Josh. As an accomplished poet yourself, I value your opinion very much. The thing that's been giving me the most trouble over the years since I wrote it is the title! I think I've changed it about 5 times. None of the previous titles really fit what I was going for. The new one I just slapped on there fits the best I think. Dr. Bosch is a reference to the Renaissance era painter Hieronymous Bosch. His painting "The Garden of Earthly Delights" contains a section called "Hell." You've probably seen it hanging in my house, in the kitchen. It's a disturbing picture, and one that perfectly expresses what I was going through on those bad trips that inspired the poem.
