OC/ROUTE 50 TOLL BOOTH PROPOSAL PASSES COUNCIL

BREAKING NEWS (AP):

(Ocean City, MD) By a slim 4-to-3 margin, the Ocean City (MD) Town Council has passed controversial legislation to allow the placement of two (2) toll booths on the eastbound lanes, on the western side of the Route 50 bridge.

After a raucous and sometimes heated debate on the amount of the toll, Town officials agreed on a $5.00 fee (inbound only), as opposed to the originally proposed $10.00 toll charge.

The most vocal opponents to the "Ocean City Toll Bridge Proposal" consisted of a group of OC nightclub owners who had organized to vehemently oppose the toll, stating it was nothing more than a "cover charge" to get into Ocean City.

During the debate, one Council member pointed out the toll situation on I-95 near Elkton, MD.
"Have you ever driven to Perryville, MD? It costs you a $5.00 toll to go just a few hundred yards to the Perryville exit off of I-95. And they don’t even have a beach."

With design and placement plans already completed, the new toll booths should be up and operational on or before Memorial Day Weekend 2009.

Town officials are urging concerned citizens and all interested parties to continue to voice their opinions and receive up-to-the-minute updates, by contacting the "Route 50 Toll Proposal Hotline" at 781 452-0842, a toll-free, recorded announcement.
