SANTIAGO SALAZAR aka DJ S2
from LOS HERMANOS & GALAXY 2 GALAXY
Underground Resistance, Planet E, Icon, Detroit, Techno

Santiago Salazar started dj'ing in 1992. Being sparked by mix tapes his brother was bringing back from the underground scene in Los Angeles. Santiago got his first break at an afterhours club called 'The Beverly Room' dj'ing from Midnight til' 5:00am. He soon became an underground favorite of the house scene. Later, he got gigs at other afterhour clubs such as 'Respect', 'Graveyard Shift', 'Arena', 'Studio', 'Scandalo', and 'Reactor.' His <myspace>style</myspace> is best know for playing house and techno layering tracks upon tracks, riding them together, making a lot of great sounding "third records", all the while working the mixer to great effect. In 2004, Santiago joined Galaxy 2 Galaxy and Los Hermanos live bands touring with them around the world. Using his DJ skills, he controlled the flow and the intensity of the live performances. Not only was he a part of the bands musically, he was also running visuals for the bands simultaneously. Santiago credits the band members as a major influence in his DJ sets: "The band consisting of veteran musicians, taught me a lot about performances, about giving a live show and making it entertaining. From that, I implemented their knowledge into my dj sets."-santiago
Santiago has released EP's on Underground Resistance, Aztech Sol, Los Hermanos, Tunnel 7, Phases and Planet E with partner Esteban Adame under the production name: Ican. In December 2006, Ican launched there first release 'Si Se Puede' on there own record Label, Ican Productions.
He has remixed UR's Timeline 'Return of the Dragons' and Aztec Mystic's "Aguila" and was a key artist on Underground Resistance ISF2 project having the most production on the album. Santiago has played around the globe at clubs like Fabric - London, Rex Club - Paris, Club Yellow/Liquid Room - Tokyo, Emotio - Skopje, Link in Bologna, to name a few. He has played such Festivals as: DEAF - Dublin, Monegros Desert Festival - Spain, Metamorphos - Japan, Shine - Belfast and Astropolis in Brest, France.

INTERSTELLAR FUGITIVE DJ SKURGE
Underground Resistance, Interstellar Fugitives, The Aqaunauts, Detroit, Techno & Electro

Underground Resistance (commonly abbreviated to UR) are a musical collective from Detroit, Michigan, in the United States of America. They are the most militantly political example of modern Detroit Techno, with a grungy, four-track musical aesthetic and a strictly anti-mainstream business strategy. Trading mainstream popularity and financial success for independence and self-determination, for a long time, the members would refuse to be photographed without bandanas obscuring their identities. They espouse a radical, militaristic ethos similar to Public Enemy and have exerted their portion of Detroit Techno's cultural influence towards promoting political activism. Although UR remains largely aloof of the more high-profile American and European scenes, UR tracks have occasionally been released on other labels (usually in what UR metaphorically describe as "reconnaissance" or "infiltration"). The prominent German Techno label Tresor reissued 12-inches from the early UR catalog and a React label compilation featured exclusive tracks from Banks and other UR artists. The first full-length album credited to Underground Resistance - Live was 1998's "Interstellar Fugitives", which saw Mike Banks redefining the collective's sound as "High-Tech Funk", reflecting a shift in emphasis from hard, minimal club Techno to breakbeats, Electro and even occasionally Drum and Bass and down-tempo Hip-Hop. In 1999, newcomer DJ Rolando released UR's most commercially successful EP, "The Knights of The Jaguar". Then when the 7” single “Cruise Ship Killer” [UR 2004] was released by the Aquanauts, the world came to understand the terror of DJ Skurge. His follow-up, “Slide, Skate,” [UR 2005] is an intense dance floor hit. Working from Detroit and Japan, Skurge teamed up with Mike Banks and Gerald Mitchell–as Interstellar Fugitives Band–to produce a double CD of explosive tracks, “Destruction of Order” [UR 2006]. Skurge is not content to simply produce and often ventures out of the studio to destroy DJ complacency. He sends a message to chin-strokers everywhere: “If you’re not dancing, you’re already dead!”

ULTRADYNE - LIVE PA
Pi Gao Movement, Warp, Detroit, Dark Electro

The mysterious duo, better known as Ultradyne, has been making some of the more interesting and unique electro music to grace a turntable. Previously they have referred to their hometown of Detroit as their training ground but thats where the connection ends, this is music that does not belong to any regional pigeonhole. They have a multitude of releases since 1993, all quality, with even the strangest and most impenetrable tracks on first listen finally revealing themselves to be the diamonds in the rough they are. As for their artwork, song titles and lyrics, thats a whole other area to get lost in as with this band even a typeface could mean something. Basically, like all the best things you have to make an effort with this group. The fact that Ultradyne normally lets the music do the talking for them and are rarely unmasked has not done them any harm in the development of a strong cult following around the world. In the past they have hinted at their motivation when they spoke about their name meaning the perfect machine, but a machine of ideas whose motion is perpetuated by those who are willing to listen and obey. It is now time to listen and obey!

SECOND FLOOR: (International Assault)

CHARLES COOPER
of TELEFON TEL AVIV - LIVE
Telefon Tel Aviv, Hefty Records, Chicago, IL Electronica, Ambient Techno, Idm

Sharing a love for classical music, as well as electronic and ambient techno, duo Telefon Tel Aviv (Charles Cooper and Joshua Eustis) formed in 1999 in New Orleans. After a four-song demo made its way to experimental electronic label Hefty records, the duo released their debut full-length, Fahrenheit Fair Enough, in September 2001. One great thing about artists – real ones, not pop frauds - is their inherent desire to escape the safety of established territories and seek out the uncharted. Map of What is Effortless, the second album by Telefon Tel Aviv is a prime example of this. Two musicians locked up inside a computer labyrinth, looking for a new musical language to access their pleasure and pain, as Marvin Gaye and Björk records rock that labyrinth's PA. In creating their album, multi-instrumentalists Joshua Eustis and Charlie Cooper, both 26, emptied their tanks running that muse down. The result is one of the most surprising electronic records in recent memory. Wanna call it Laptop Soul? Well, go right ahead. In addition to these albums, Telefon Tel Aviv has contributed to several other projects, including Slicker (also on Hefty) and remixes for Nine Inch Nails' Things Falling Apart EP as well as being a featured group on VH1. Also in 2001, the duo composed the score for New Port South, a feature film by Kyle Cooper (director of the main title sequence to Seven and founder of Imaginary Forces, a Los Angeles design firm). Dont miss this "rare" Detroit appearance from Charles Cooper of Telefon Tel Aviv!

TESTE aka HIMADRI - LIVE PA
PLUS.8 (+8), Switch Records Toronto, Canada, Dub Step Techno, Acid, Minimal

TESTE was the original alias for techno producer Himadri of Richie Hawtin's +8 records. In 1991 during the time of Chemistry and Nitrous raves in Toronto a partnership was made between David Foster (now drummer for junior boys and then drummer for Eden Mandate. The two began an industrial group called Kanal and then AVM, which opened for many industrial shows such as DHI, bang elektroniq and digital poodle. Himadri left his 1987 hiphop act after opening for public enemy to promote 1987 AVM's demo in London UK where he also handed out tapes of TESTE, the loopy distorted experimental tape of beats made on a tr909 with a tb303 and other analog synths. "Ironically, I had the 909 as a 14yr old to help me keep tempo for my sitar lessons..." Himadri recalls. In London where he discovered dance music, He made friends with several uk djs and shops and when he returned he discovered that the music that he thought was an experiment was coming from detroit in particular transmat records and underground resistance's "we are on tv". after making over 100 tapes which circulated across usa, germany and uk to similar unknown producers at the time in a new music deemed "techno" as techno was becoming what we now know. Soon afterwards AVM finished its full legth album in 1989 when 100 tapes were manufactured but destroyed in a destructive activity as the band broke up their reputed shows of extreme visuals, crazy antiques and dark mysterious electronic songs. The three were then approached by Richie Hawtin after a Nitrous Rave in Toronto where Teste performed in the side room with a group of performance artists to shock the crowd of the new rave crowd. Richie played in the main room with Dan Bell, OS2 and Place called Bliss. "It was funny because i didnt have monitors and it was dark so it was a wierd show, but the monopoly which was being triggered by the tr 909 goes down below 30 hz so i pushed the system to extreme low base and kept the beats minimal, people were dancing staring at our outfits and the performers and feeling nothing but bass and a kick drum..in retrospect , that became the minimal sound of almost all of my records since..." says Himadri, over 30 records later being featured on more than 20 compilations and mixed cds for renown international djs. ...that was the time of our lives. when techno was starting. not jazzy detroit techno but mental, deep hard seminal techno whatever the hell that is...best party we ever played was GRIN in detroit" Unfortunatley, David Foster left TESTE after Regions where he performed vocals which triggered a moog liberty and korg mini. Spatial K and Praecox were part of the original tapes circulated in 1988 and were mastered from tape to vinyl. Himadri has begun to tour as Teste after a 9 year hiitus and refuses to use laptops in a show of gear and hardware.

ACIDWOLF aka FLASHBULB - LIVE PA
Alpha Basic, Sublight, Rephlex, Chicago, IL, RARE ACID TECHNO LIVE SET!!

Benn Jordan (the man behind The Flashbulb, Flexe, Q-bit, Acidwolf, and countless other pseudonyms) is well known around the world in electronica for his abrasive trademarks multiplied with a level of diversity that makes just about anyone’s head spin. His catalog of releases is so extensive and obscure that there is no place on the internet that can accurately and completely list them. It also seems that Benn has replaced sleeping with film composing, and has recently mirrored his accomplishments in the film industry. Pick any album out of this long discography and you’ll find that it has its own place, and sometimes its own genre. He was born in The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, GA in 78. At a young age he moved from an American Indian reservation to Chicago, and was fluent in music notation before his first day of grade school. By the time Benn was old enough to drive, he was not only teaching classical guitar, but he had also taken part in Chicago’s explosive acid house and industrial scenes of the mid-nineties by releasing albums on obscure short-lived labels and lugging synthe<myspace>size</myspace>rs into parties instead of turntables. After his first tour in 1999, Jordan released the album “M³” under the alias “The Flashbulb” that gained him an international following with little more promotion than word of mouth. Another significant point of Benn’s popularity was his release of a speaker-cone-tearing remix on Aphex Twin’s label Rephlex Records. Shortly thereafter came “Drain Mode = ON” on Germany’s Suburban Trash & many other releases that marked him as a key figure, if not a pioneer, in a genre well known today as breakcore. Other releases near the turn of the millennium include “These Open Fields”, which used raw emotion and atmosphere to break through to its listeners instead of impressive computer sequencing. In 2003 Alphabasic released “Resent And The April Sunshine Shed”, which featured a heavy Eastern influence complete with Benn’s own sitar playing. In early 2004 Sublight Records opened shop with “Red Extensions Of Me” which combined the ultimate homage of abrasive breakbeat sequencing with melodies recorded from guitars and basses rigged with MIDI pickups. 2004 also brought us another one of Benn’s aliases called “Flexe”, who released “Programmable Love Songs Volume 1”, a dance oriented album made with homemade software. In live performances, The Flashbulb often raises the laptop performer’s bar by bringing midi guitars and foot-controlled heavy effect units along with him on tour. The Flashbulb’s upcoming 2005 release “Kirlian Selections” features everything from a full orchestra to field recordings to mind-blowing computer sequencing. This most significant release is an emotional whirlwind further proving his talent and originality, blending his most abrasive extremes with subtle and genius melody compositions and a giant list of live instrument performances. Judging from accomplishments and expectations he’s made for himself, it’s hard imagine Benn Jordan not playing a significant role in everything he applies himself to. As his following and popularity continues to grow, so does his creative output and production. Don’t let the lack of mainstream publicity fool you, Jordan has worked alongside everyone from Cylob to Elton John, and his name is attached to everything from computer software to feature films.

detroit was crazy. forans was good, but generally demf was not the same vibe. the jungle tent near river, booker shade, and vladislav delay weremy pics. the sound for the mainstage were mint. clear seperation of all freq and clear bass with no harmonic distortion..just perfect.

my gig at forans went pretty well. the gig the next night was allright too untill the bouncers started taking it out on the kids. the promoter was decent though and the lineup for the party was killer. unfortunately the venue was no good. good live lounge on woodward was not very respectfull and violent towards techno kids. they violated human rights and violently hurt people. there is no place for that.
