HELLO GANG!

Sorry about the silence on my end, but I've really just been enjoying a break from the world. After A CATERED AFFAIR closed on Broadway I finally had the time to stay home and finish unpacking all my boxes from the move. Well, not ALL the boxes. But I've filled my walls and shelves and am really settling into life in the new house.

Of course the house is still not finished. Why would it be? I moved out January 2006 for an 18 month construction job that has lasted 31 months and counting. Oh, yeah! THIRTY-ONE MONTHS and the driveway remains unpaved, the kitchen not done and I have a three page list of items that need repair or finishing.

One day I may tell the tale, but for now I'll keep it to myself. Hmmm.

BROADWAY

Well, with my time off I've also gotten to see a couple of shows about town. My fave thusfar was HAIR. I attended the opening night in Central Park and had a wonderful time. One thing puzzled me though: The show takes place in Central Park. We were in Central Park. But the set designer surrounded the stage with a big wooden wall that blocked out our view of the park. WHY? I didn't get it. But the show may move to Broadway and when it does they will probably cover the theater's wooden walls with trees so that will make up for the other production.

Sunday I'm going to see XANADU at last. I have so many friends in the show and it will be great to watch them work it!

And before the performance I'll be over at THE NEIL SIMON THEATER celebrating HAIRSPRAY'S SIXTH ANNIVERSARY!!!! Hard to believe that it was six years ago that we opened the show. What a trip. Just thinking back, since leaving HAIRSPRAY after 2 years, I've done more than a year on Broadway in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, followed by HAIRSPRAY Las Vegas, then the San Diego try-out of A CATERED AFFAIR and the Broadway run of it. I've also built a house, adopted two cats, lost 2 dogs and 2 other cats, not to mention losing and gaining hundreds of pounds! Man, do I know how to fill six years!!!!! No wonder I'm tired.

MOVIES
Finally got to BATMAN today. Fun. Loud. Entertaining. Violent. And I don't mean to be picky but... lots of it made no sense at all. Still, I certainly felt I got my money's worth. But I wondered about Heath Ledger's performance. Sometimes I thought he was doing a Dustin Hoffman in MIDNIGHT COWBOY impersonation. In other scenes his accent was totally different. Still, it was a fascinating performance and I was riveted.

I also got to see BRIDESHEAD REVISITED which I really LOVED. Beautiful film, magnificently shot and acted. They tried hard to capture the story in total and I appreciated the effort. I recommend this for a summer's evening.

And then there was WALL-E. A delight. And the HELLO DOLLY music just made me laugh and laugh. Don't miss this one either. But I think of the three this one will not lose much on a home theater screen. The others should be movie outings.

WRITING
I've begun work on a new show. Anyone who knows me knows that I don't discuss what I'm working on until it's time to go public. But I think this one will be a BIG FAT FUN NIGHT IN THE THEATER FOR EVERYONE. After the tender solitude of A CATERED AFFAIR, I really wanted to write something that would allow the composer to let loose. This, I think, is it. More as it comes together.

SHOPPING
Not much shopping lately. I went to the ELEPHANT TRUNK FLEA MARKET two weeks ago and found some treasures. But my budget needs to be spent finishing up the house and not on frivolities. (But I am planning on going to an auction next week, so we'll see how my budget survives.)

So, kids, that's where I've been and what I've been doing. I promise to try and keep you up to date on all in the world of HARVEY. And I must get the camera out and share the summer views. So, until we meet again...

....STAY TUNED!

Yea! Glad to know you are well and having fun this summer. I LOVED Hair and Xanadu and [title of show].

You also MUST go see BASH'd before it closes on August 30 at the Zipper.

I miss you and hope to see you soon!

So good to hear from you. You've been missed. I was at the last performance of your gem, "A Catered Affair" and treasured every moment knowing I was witnessing something very special and I got to chat with John Bucchino sitting behind me. I did see you make a sad face to Heather on the closing song. I'm gonna see "Hair" tomorrow night in Asbury Park. The carousel house was converted into a theatre. Spent many a fun summer nite there as a kid with my family. Looking forward to your next post. XO!

Awww, thanks, Harvey, for keeping us informed of what you're up to. I look forward to your posts, and pictures, too. I loved Hair .... it's one of my favorite musicals of all time... and also Hello Dolly.... I was singing in my head along with Wall-E... such an adorable film. Batman... ehhh.... not so much for me.... although I thought Heath did do a good job of it.... just not a fan of the whole Batman thing.

Enjoy and relax.... you deserve it....

Peace,
Mary

To my dear friend, Harvey Forbes Fierstien III,
My kids,(3 step and1 natural), bought my wife and I tickets to see , "A Catered Affair",which we were to see for our 6th wedding anniversary. Wellllll! My wife and I returned from Alaska on August 3rd only to find that the play had been scrubbed. Well my high school friend . The next time you decide to toss a production out... Please send me a line .It's a real pain in the butt to switch the tickets. Hope you have a great summer. It's great to say hi to an A&D friend. I think you're a real person because I knew you when you were ,Harv.
Don't forget our friend Luke(Robert) Ryan. He's a subway musician at Grand Central Station and he can be found on,msg.com/subtracks. He's 16 of the 16 finalists on the show.
Me? I'm just a grumpy 58 year old retired guy trying to be a handyman.
Peace my brother.

I couldn't agree with you more about everything you've written about Batman and I'm with you 100% about Brideshead Revisited - I still remember keeping up with the TV series back in the 80s when I was just a kid - Jeremy Irons became one of my favorite actors. Regarding the set design in Central Park, my assessment could be incorrect, but perhaps it might have been not so much what they wanted the audience to see, but who or what they were attempting to block out? Who knows?

Two kudos as always and thanks much for continuing to share an interesting life. Many of us are very fortunate and I give thanks that I consider us among the fortunate, for life, with all it's faults and failures and disappointments, is still loaded with plenty of blessings to be grateful for.

You are such a busy man! I look forward to reading more about the new show when the time is right, and following your adventures in the meantime. Hopefully, at some point you will share the secret of losing weight, for the last ten years I have only been able to find it.

I am sad that I didn't make it to see A Catered Affair before it closed, but my friend Kirby saw it and he got your autograph for me... so thank you for that! I directed a community theatre production of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and he gave it to me on opening night and I almost cried!

Dear Harvey,
Well I am glad to hear from you. I get to find out what goes on in the real world. How I miss NY and all the surrounding areas. In Houston well they have a theater district and it's okay, but as you know It's not NY that's for sure. My daughter loves the theater as well and would really enjoy seeing anything your in. Can't wait to get the next news you have coming. Have a great end of summer.

And here, all this time, I thought it was something I said!!! (Just kidding!)

Wow, have you ever been busy! It is truly amazing how time flies, isn't it? I know I've already said it, but I'll say it again - I LOVED "A Catered Affair"!!! I'll be on Governor's Island for a WTC Tribute Center volunteer picnic. I'm planning to get there WAY earlier and I'm bringing the camera to take lots of pictures, because it should be AWESOME! Have a great week!

I think you should write a book about your house experience, 31 months is just crazy-and STILL not done? I would be crazed! I must be a naive Midwesterner, but when someone tells me it will take 18 months-I expect it to actually be done-in 18 months. I know, I know-Naive and obviously- should never have remodeling done. ;-)
Glad to see you're enjoying yourself, and having some fun. Good luck with your auction-hope you find some nice treasures that can survive the budget. Take care and enjoy the rest of the summer-looking forward to some new photos.

"There's one more thing you better understand. I have taught myself to sew, cook, fix plumbing, build furniture - I can even pat myself on the back when necessary - all so I don't have to ask anyone for anything." --This line is so you!

"I know you'll find this hard to comprehend, but I want more out of life than meeting a pretty face and sitting down on it." --and you found it

can't wait to see pics of the new house! Man i wish i had just a snip-it of your life now and again!

loved you for many years,

Mr. Fierstein,

It's always wonderful to read your blogs.
I know about the moving thing, I just moved to Las Vegas
and in between working and trying to fix the house, it's
taking forever. The picture frames are up and alot of things
are in place, but it seems there's not end to the boxes.

May I ask you a question?

You mentioned you lost 2 dogs... how did you lose them?

I lost 2 boxers the year before, 1 to cancer (the male)
and 4 months I lost the female. She (Lady) was never the same after
Addisson (the male) passed away. She suffered a stroke and
we had to put her to sleep. I miss my babies so very much.
I have no children and they were considered my children.
I also have 2 cats. Mia and Chloe :-)

I wish you Much Love and Blessings Always,

Terry / Gen

Oh Harvey...I'm SOOOOOOOO glad to see another blog from you. I was going thru withdrawal.

I totally agree with Jerbey...you absolutely MUST go see BASH'D. It was terrific. I'm not generally into rap, but this show was brilliant. Poignant, sweet, funny, sad....all in all just wonderful. Have a great weekend.

Glad you're back!
I hope you're enjoying an awewome northeast summer.

I just saw the new batman movie last night, also.
I really liked it, in comparison to other batman movies. Christian Bale is marvelously cool. Especially when he is Bruce Wayne, more so than B-man... whatever techno thing they did to his voice while batman was distracting.
As for Heath Ledger, he's a fantastic actor, and he did an exceptional job, better than most, but Oscar-ish might be pushing it.
My fave part... the two ferry boats... the prisoner sez... I'll do what you should've done 10 minutes ago......

Thanks so much for the update Harvey. I am glad you are getting to catch up with seeing some shows and working on getting the house done! I look ofrward to your new show you are writing. I love everything you do. Just pulled out Torch Song the other day and watched that. Any updates on reviving that for Broadway? The show was so amazing!
Enjoy the rest of your summer. Much love and happiness to you :)

You're gonna adore Xanadu! 'Natch. We saw it last Nov when just about everything else was on strike.

We did the sit on stage thing. What fun! I felt like I was at a T-dance circa 1986 but without the poppers and fan dancers!

I always love to hear what you have to say on movies and theatre. I'm working on going to see HAIR myself next week. Glad you liked it, and I'm SO so happy to hear you're writing again! I can't wait to see what comes out this time.

I haven't seen Dark Knight yet, but again, it's on my "to-do" list. Wall-E too, gotta love Disney :).

As for the construction *bangs head on desk* I totally understand the whole mess. My parents had our kitchen re-done a few years back, and like a two week job turned into like, 6 months! All you gotta do is know that it WILL get done, and it will look spectacular! :D.

Anyway, just wanted to pop by and say hi and all :). Talk to you later :)

Much love and respect,

Sami

I can't believe it...I said the very same thing about Heath Ledger/Dustin Hoffman...my boyfriend looked at me like I had grown a third head... Don't get me wrong, I love me some Heath Ledger...hard, hard...but, WOW...I so saw Ratso Rizzo AND Rain Man AND I have said it on many occasions (shrinking violet that I am) that I thought Heath had the easier role than Aaron Eckhardt...anyway...I am even more convinced that you an I were twins in another life!!! Please come to L.A. I want to cook for you :)
