Who Gives Kudos:

I'm disappointed, but I'm not surprised. To clarify- I'm disappointed
by the imposition of jail time by a supposedly liberal state like Sweden, but I'm
not surprised by the ruling against Pirate Bay. This is another of
those belated and clumsy lunges towards international state-regulated
censorship and corporate control of the internet. However, its way too
little and its far too late. This ruling may have lopped off a head-
but this hydra has millions of heads. The verdict against Pirate Bay
was a bully-boy flexing of corporate/state muscle, an attempt to make a
public example.

Thats a mistake. History shows clearly that this tactic is futile -
control through fear only works if the control is total. Otherwise it
just ignites resentment, and thus wider rebellion.

I have no qualms whatsoever sharing and downloading files. And I say
that despite the fact that 90% of the people with a Whitey record didnt
buy it. Its simply the way things are now, and its the price we pay for
the worldwide and relatively unregulated exchange of information,
creativity and opinion- if I wanted to interfere with this freedom
purely for my own financial gain I'd be a stupid and selfish creature.
And I'd fail.

Or, to react to this ruling in two words: King Canute.

That is a rare outlook among artist today.

The public behaves as if piracy is included in the process of globalization. Yeah man, though it..s uninspiring to say the least; Canute says it all.

I obtained "The Light...." via colleague as an MP3 file, but I wanted to know more and the CD was hard to find (pre-US release), so had to resort to eBay to find a used copy. Even in the San Francisco area, with only a handful of brick and mortar record stores left, it's kind of like the old days of search and destroy for a particular record.

Yeah, I heard 'wrap it up' on the new GTA game and after an epic trek on the internet, finally found some of your stuff for sale. Seems like the people who have bought your music jumped through fire to get it.

I think that the ready availability of music via torrent sites etc allows people to be more discerning and will maybe make the record companies get their acts together and release some good music. Nothing too manufactured or clean cut, nothing thats going to appeal to suitable demographics and all that crap. Just something soulful. Thats blatantly wishful thinking though.

On a completely unrelated note, I read 'A Confederacy of Dunces' on your recommendation and thought it was easily one of the best books I've read in years. Thanks!

I feel that people have the right to listen to music freely and should then buy the music from artists they like... thanks to things like myspace, lastfm, and other places where you can stream full albums people can

so yeah like Shazbot a little of both..

I feel if you freely share, you're only being realistic.  Besides, if people appreciate it enough they'll support you with donations, actually buying a record or two, and coming to a show.

Besides, free music is really free advertising.

I'm doing music business management at uni at the moment and we are talking about how soon music might be 100% free on the interent. It will work in the same way as radio stations work where internet providers will pay a licensing fee. So in theory it wont be free because we will all pay for it when we sign up to our internet plan. The best thing about this is artists will see more money through publishing royalties and wont lose out like they are at the moment. If anyone is interested look up Gerd Leonhard - Music 2.0.

I've really generalised it as the topic goes much deeper but if you have the time, look into it, it's pretty exciting stuff.
