New Years has a big ego and he's been talking a lot of trash about how great he is. We think he's ripe for an ass-kicking. Seriously, for professional party-goers, New Years may be the worst night of the year to go out; dressing up, stifling traffic, and ridiculous cover charges just to get IN, then dealing with overcrowding, over-hyped music, couples fighting publicly, and drunk amateurs barfing on your shoe. On December 29, Sunset Promotions & the Fringe, the folks who brought you Freaksgiving and Freqo de Mayo, rip the lid off New Years and drop a dukie on the whole over-hyped farce that New Years has become. Join us as we ring in the day before the worst night of the year with a malt liquor toast, piñata drop at midnight, the broken countdown, ghetto-formal (pimp and ho yo!) attire, a cheap ticket (10 bucks) , and some UNDER-hyped, OVER-funky music featuring two heroes of the East Coast nufunk/breaks world Allgood Funk Alliance and Haj.
Allgood Funk Alliance has been churning out newschool funk with an oldschool sound for years now. With some of the most coveted limited-release breaks records on the planet emerging from their Washington DC-based Funk Weapons label, AGFA has emerged as a leader in the struggle to make dance music relevant to folks who like the live sound. Along with Fort Knox 5, Kraak & Smaak, Wicked Lester and Bay Area adherents like Romanowski, AGFA makes funk that sounds like… well… funk. Haj on the other hand makes every kind of music under the sun and blends them together in something that is nothing but funky. A founder of New York's seminal Burning man arts collective "Freek Factory" and world-breaks trio Sub Swara, Haj plays lush beats that sound like real instruments because he uses real instruments to make 'em.
Rounding out the show on 12.29 are some San Francisco folks who let their party do the rocking. An-Ten-Nae (Adam Ohana) hosts 1015 Folsom's groundbreaking "Get Freaky" parties and makes superb nuschool breaks. Motion Potion has been organizing and Djing at genre-defying dance events for 10 years, and has been known to rock every conceivable type of beat in his set. Though he's the "frickin new kid" in the House of Lotus crew, Ben Maybe's got skills seldom seen in the underground, showing off freshg turntablism in sets steeped in funk, hip hop, and breaks. Victor Vega's a specialist in electro and 80's house, making for a mix that's so sexy you'll want to drop the laundry on the dancefloor. Mycho Cocoa is known for world-infused house beats and for his crazy ass hair, don't forget the hair! Big Dolla Bill has a mashup habit that he's been trying to kick for years; we're hoping the soul patch does the trick.
