Thanks to everyone who turned up for the Trees Friday night show. It was Jeff, Nick, Bonnie and myself for the show, and the turnout was fantastic including a few old friends that I hadn't seen in years. I pulled out an old favorite Rosy and Gray for my friend Erin … we sang that song together years ago, and we both knew it like yesterday. Linda May played a great set to close the night. Great energy and a fantastic voice. I can't wait to give her CD a listen. I ran into John Pippus, who runs the night, through the myspace site of Vancouver artist/producer Winston. I was taken by the number of great songwriters connected through the two of them. It just seems like a thriving and supportive scene, and I was glad to make contact and be a part of it. I made at trip to Vancouver a few weeks before and saw Winston, Pippus and Nat Jay at the Backstage Lounge. The three played songs in the round, and the most striking thing was how closely they resembled and sounded like their musical and personal presence on the web. Winston's career seems to have a have a great deal of momentum, backed by a very solid talent as a singer, songwriter and producer. Pippus also runs Sunday night shows at the Penthouse. He's a great writer, and I really love his song Oh, Oh, Oh. Produced by Winston, the song first caught my attention online, though I thought he was even better in person. Earlier that evening I took in a set by Mani Khaira at the Roxy. Khaira has a phenomenal voice, and I was really taken by his solo performance.
