Explanation: The Speak and Spell was one of my favorite toys as a kid. This Speak and Spell in the video is being triggered via MIDI signal from Ableton Live 8 Beta (beta tester this time ). At one point I trigger it from a keyboard. There are supposedly 128 banks of sounds (haven't counted to make sure) which are selectable via octave selectors, mod wheel, or other ways depending on your triggering mechanism, be it DAW, sequencer, drum machine, etc. I built a board from Highly Liquid (lots of tiny diodes, resistors, other components, and soldering) and routed the traces to my previously modded circuit board in the toy. At first it didn't work, so I frustratingly traced circuits and realized the main IC on the MIDI board wasn't seated properly. Once that was solved, everything fired up and began working as designed.
Enjoy
