April 24, 2008 by Goldmine writers Peter Murphy’s Carver Combo One Sin Between Me and the Lord (Knockout KNO 01) Grade: **** Not a new vehicle for the former Bauhaus frontman of the same name (although you wouldn’t guess it from either the voice, or the lack of explanatory pre-publicity), Peter Murphy’s Carver Combo formed in Sweden five years ago. Murphy himself is one of his homeland’s most in-demand songwriters, and one listen to this album tells you why. Working within a framework roughly delineated by psychotic American country-blues, a touch of rockabilly and a whole heap of swing, One Sin ... is best described as the sort of album the Birthday Party might have made had it paid more attention to melody than noise. "Stray Boxcar Town," "Maricopa Girl" and "Bones and Pearls" all seethe with twisted, swamp-monster intent, although the appearance of guest vocalist Anna Stadling on "Instigator," and the bright ballroom lights of "In The Ballroom" ensure that the album never settles into one groove for too long. So don’t let the name fool you (or otherwise); this may not be your father’s Peter Murphy, but the Carver Combo will cut you up just the same. — Dave Thompson
