We need to unite firmly and consolidate ourselves as people... attending the celebration and honoring of an incredible man would be a great start...

A mural celebrating Palestinian and Arabic culture and honoring professor Edward Said (1935-2003) will be inaugurated on Friday November 2nd, 2007 at Cesar Chavez Student Center - San Francisco State University. Long-awaited and hard-won, this mural remembers the literary and activist spirit of one of the greatest literary figures of the twentieth century.

The mural, a permanent piece of art celebrating the life and the work of Edward Said, is project of the General Union of Palestine Students (GUPS) and SFSU Cesar Chavez Student Center. The mural is the first of its kind on any American university campus. It has been achieved after a long, unrelenting, and sustained struggle spearheaded by the Palestinian students at SFSU, their friends, and community support. It is a celebration of education, humanism, culture, and identity.

A day-long celebration is planned for the day of inauguration on November 2nd, 2007. There will be festivities taking place all day from 10:30 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. All events and festivities will be held on the San Francisco State University Campus. The events will feature cultural presentations, inspirational speakers, music, performances, food and much more.

The lead artists for the mural are Dr. Fayeq Oweis and Dr. Susan Greene who worked over the past two years to come up with a design featuring over 20 elements that symbolize and celebrate the work of Edward Said, the Palestinians struggle for peace and justice, Arabic culture, and students' activism. To view the design of the mural, you can check GUPS web site at http://www.sfgups.org...
