Thanks to the deXter Bentley crew for having us back on the show on November 4th. They've kindly let us have the recording of the song we played to put up here. It's "Wayfaring Stranger", which is a traditional American folk hymn. Unlike the sort of hymns you find in hymn books, it speaks of the suffering of real people and the longing for something better. Many musicians have covered it, and it always appears in tutor books for folk instruments. I first came across it in a penny whistle tutor book when I was learning that, and then in a mandolin tutor book when I was learning mandolin. I don't think they had in mind tuning the mandolin the way I've got it tuned though (3 C#s and a G#)!
The faster tune which follows the song is a bourree, which is a type of traditional French dance, but the tune is my own.
