Current mood:  contemplative
So the rumor mill came back to me last eve that some audience member had thought I had said something offensive towards Texans on my blog.  First off, I have nothing against this place.  Both sides of my family are from here.  Second, I had a hard time finding anything that could be taken that way, then I looked under something I had written last year describing someone that had helped me on the way.
I had said briefly that on the way out here "I was aggressively helped by hillbillies."
Just to be clear, they were self described and proud hillbillies from CA.  I had described the guy as "Boomhower on a lot of meth."  That really was kind of what the guy was like.  You could hardly understand a word the guy had said.  He also talked a million miles an hour and was more aggressive about helping than anyone I had seen.  Perhaps he was working off some karma.  I know the guy had said he had just gotten out of jail for murder.  I found this out as he was driving me around town, and telling me how crazy most of the people in that town thought he was.  He flipped off a sheriff's wife as he drove past while telling me that they would never arest him in that town because he had something on the town judge.  We ran into the town judge and the guy knew him by name and shook his hand.    Bald and covered with tattoos, the guy was amazingly helpful, but somehow scary at the same time.  In his rantings while driving me around looking for a used tire he had said he was a reformed carreer criminal.  In this very small town he had been stabbed by 4 different people, and shot by 2 others.  Just as he told me this he waved at a guy that waved back.  "That's one of the guys that shot me.  We get along better now though." he said.
He got me a tire, jacked up the trailer, and put the thing on for me.  Sure my danger sense tingled the entire time, but he really did help me.
I was already locked in the car when he pulled out the huge beer that he drank while he swerved down the road ranting the entire time.
Oddly the guy was really nice, but dangerous and scary.  An interesting combination. Thanks man where ever you are!
If I offended anyone by his description, keep in mind his own description of himself would probably be crazier.  He was a good guy.  He seemed like he felt he needed to do some good deeds to make up for the past.
In the end he made me promise to help someone else.  I did indeed do so.

Deep breath dear sir. We have discovered that in every audience, in every social circle (not to mention every town, village or city) and even in every family, there are a few that feel obligated to complain of something. I assume it stems back to when there was no TV or radio and we sat around nattering about life. If misery exists then we must also exist. I admit that we should be careful but even careful sometimes gets us in trouble. We had someone in the audience that complained bitterly about our 'fake accents' and whined about how we should just give it up and talk natural as this person felt that it was obvious we were all faking it. Someone then said in reply 'One of that cast is from Britain, recently arrived, actually. Can you figure out which one?'. The audience member could not.

We've had lies spread from various people bitter that we would not modify to suit them so they will see us shut down by 'spreading truth' or at least their version. Remarks about steriotypes being over used and then the remarks about steriotypes being underused. Yes... Underused. Example: Our pirates don't always say 'ARRR' nor do they ramble off a thousand piratisms. They actually have script!! There are many people who will find fault where there is none and ramble off on their own crusades. There's nothing we can do except hope people listen to the right persons. For every one rumour that makes it back to you, a dozen or more did not. Just like one complaint to a company counts as 10 to 1000 complaints not heard. It's a safe assumption business operates by. BUT it is a safe assumption that should not stop you from operating.

The members of this group who have seen your show love your performance. As long as your show brings in an audience and you entertain the masses, all is well. Family forgives and if your audience is an extended family, there will be forgiveness. I am actually happy that you put this here. That character could be an incredible person to base a story character on in a movie or a renfest.

Thank you for being honest.

Chris (on behalf of myself not the BCRF)

Heya!! Rumors suck! I know! I live in a small hick town (okay, it IS the most liberal in Utah ... but the most conservative I have EVER lived in and I include NM, CO and OK in that count!) and am very different from anyone here, ergo I hear lots of rumors all the time. And I married a cowboy and I am a proud NDN, so that ramps up the rumor mill even more! So I know how hard they are to deal with.

They are hard to ignore, they are hurtful and they are usually passed by people who are either trying to make problems or solve problems.
And does it matter either way?

Just remember that people are talking about you because you stand out from the crowd. You have boldly chosen to live by your own drummer, your own dance, your own songs and that will draw commentary and critisicm alike. Your path will and has brought you places that many could not even dream of in their dreams!! You inspire people to break out of their box or retreat further in or even just take time out of their everyday lives and really laugh and feel real wonder. That breathless childhood wonder.

The world is very small today and yet huge and frightening and there will always be those who draw back from the edge, who comfort themselves with their own ideologies and that is alright. Humanity needs outliers like you and me, and also the mean, median and averages ... we all balance each other out.

This rumor challenged you to examine yourself for some reason ... is the examination over and if it is not, where will it lead you to next?

Hugs!

Jess

I know you the best out of anyone in the world, and I can tell you, and anyone else for that matter, you are hands down the most lovely person I have ever met. That's why I love you so much. I just can't help it. Nor can many people that meet you... I see it happen all the time. You're absolutely fascinating, friendly, funny and downright a wonderfully happy guy to be around. To not know you is a tragedy. My heart is sad for those that don't.

We count ourselves among the lucky few that get to dedicate our lives and careers to causing happiness in the world, on stage and in random places. Some people forget that. To forget that is their loss. And my heart is sad for them too.

That's why small things like this bother us so, having dedicated our life's work to making people laugh. When you do everything you can to make someone happy, yet they resist happiness, boggles the mind.

It is my personal belief that the meaning of life is to make the world better than whence we came. And we get to do that every day by adding joy to people's lives.
How cool is that? ^_^
