SATURDAY, DEC. 8

Great news, kids. Just when you thought the scene in Long Beach was getting boring, local heroes Mike Garcia and Josh (Fingerprints), along with Matt Guy and Thad Paulson, have put together Fast Dragon. And they rock. Born of the Karp/Drive Like Jehu spirit but with updated and tightly played simplicity, the music is straight-out loud, precise and good. And if anyone knows their Karp and Jehu, it's Mike Garcia (Days End). Still new and not having played many shows, the kids opened up for the Repeater/Valley Arena and basically stole the show. According to Garcia, 'Due to the growing ear slamming mediocrity punishing us on the radio and in clubs… and the lack of production from our current significant musical others, we beer-swillin' dudes had only one choice and two rules. 1. Make a hole in the Earth, and 2. No member can weigh under 180 lbs to take this gumbo of musical balls to the street.' Using a standard set-up of twin guitar, drums and bass, the lineup played their loving version of awesome heavy rock, even though it was a somewhat short set of songs. It's an extraordinary thing to see a band only once and instantly want to see them play again. Only complaint about Fast Dragon? They don't play enough. Get out there, boys. The world of rock needs you, and that hole ain't gonna dig itself. (CH)
