I remember like it was yesterday. The band I was in at the time "Paul Pope Band" was recording at Kirk Yano's After Dark Recording Studio in Parma, Oh. Someone called in the studio and told Kirk that John Lennon was shot & killed outside his New York apartment that evening. Kirk in his deadpan way came over the talkback mic and said "John Lennon's dead".  He didn't mean any disrespect,,, that's just his way about him,,, so none of us really took any notice of what he just said and we continued working. Later on when the session wrapped up, I get to my car,, brush the light snow off,,, turned on the car radio and Beatles and Lennon music was ALL over the dial!!  Finally the DJ says, "If you haven't already heard, John Lennon was murdered outside his apartment around 10:50pm". I just couldn't believe it!!  I just turned 18 years old a few weeks earlier,,, living my dream,, playing guitar in a rock n roll band,,, recording and touring. I was weened on the Beatles music as a small child and at that moment hearing what happened,,, my childhood was suddenly over,, now it was really time to grow up.  I was a year old excactly when JFK was assasinated so I was too young to remember, but Dec 8, 1980,I will always remember where I was and what I was doing that night.  I doesn't seem that long ago!

I woke up around 11:00 and couldn't get back to sleep. Something was bothering me, but I didn't know what. I turned the radio on to help me fall back to sleep and I heard the tragic news. It's so sad that we lost Dennis Yost yesterday, too. The day the music died.

I just found out about Dennis. I knew Dennis really well. I toured with him on the "Super Rock of the 60's Tour" from 1988 thru 1992. He was a very nice guy and a pleasure to work with.

I remember that tour well. I met you during that tour at Classic Rock with Wolfman Jack in Nashville. You and Rich were sort of the house-band that day with Gary Lewis, Dennis Yost, and more (maybe Billy J. Kramer?). I forget the other guy's name, but he came looking for "Billy with the Bouf" and you were forever famous with the Professional Followers as we called ourselves. I'm still friends with some of the guys from other bands along those tours. It was a special time in my life that I get to re-live occasionally. I saw Rich last week in NJ - I went to see the Bucks and Mark.

Mr. Peanuts
Aka D.b. Cooper

There was a show going on a the Cleveland Agora on E. 24th St. that night. Who knows who the heck it was in retrospect.

Henry LoConti sent someone out to the bar to get all the media people hanging off the rail and herded them into the office. They were watching Monday Night Football and Howard Cosell came in with the announcement.

Everyone was pretty stunned. I remember Denny Sanders (or Marty Sobol from M105) went to the pay phone in the lobby to call the station. The other one basically ran out and, when he hit the lobby, jumped over all the steps and hit the ground running to get over to the station.

A strange night, indeed.
