I knew Jeff to be a man who lived with pain all his life.
He bore it with great dignity and no little humour, whilst giving us an insight to his generous soul through his unique music.
I clearly remember the enthusiastic the way he responded to my request to record a version of 'When a Blind Man Cries' for the 'Gillan's Inn' album.
He understood what it was all about - he really got it.
His performance, alongside Jon Lord's, on that song remains one of the most poignant interpretations I have ever heard.
It was an honour to know him; what he gave of himself will continue to travel with me.
Rest in peace dear friend, my god you deserve it.
With great respect, Ian Gillan
