so, i was in salt lake city when i heard that paul newman had died-and i was fucking bummed. i get an endless kick out of the comedic genius that al pacino has turned into ever since 'scarface'/i think it's damn near impossible to beat the kinetic DANGER of early deniro/and nobody can do righteous indignation like jimmy stewart--but i gotta say->my favorite actor has to be paul newman. i've never once seen him turn in a performance that didn't feel 100% true. he just couldn't be false. and i'm not even talking about 'cool hand luke'. or 'slapshot'-although we could-but i love him in 'mr. and mrs. bridge'. and i love love LOVE him in 'nobody's fool'. he was just so fucking great-how could anyone dispute it? so it was with that in mind that i kind of got righteously indignant myself when i was talking about his death to the girl who shuttled me from the hotel to the show--and she goes, 'you mean the salad dressing guy?' and i was like, what the fuck? (and to answer your question:she was 29-so it's no excuse) but the next day i started to think about it. what she said is totally valid:maybe 'newman's own' really is his true legacy. i mean, you can't put a price tag on the joy and inspiration his movies have brought to people--but when it comes down to it->all that spaghetti sauce (sockarooni!) is what has made the real-concrete-ACTUAL difference. the kind of difference that you CAN put a price tag on-what? something like 200 fucking million dollars? all for charity....kind of amazing. and this in the face of all those lying, venal wall street fucks that have sold us down the river-not to mention those lying, venal fucks in washington who not only let this happen but facilitated it. see-i want to live in paul newman's america. the one where people give a shit. and i'm starting to feel like other people want to as well. lately, i've been hearing a lot of people talking about how they're gonna move to europe if mccain wins-and i'm not necessarily down with that-but i really don't think they're gonna have to. people are fucking fed up-and not just the liberal pinkos that live in my city-i'm starting to see it everywhere. the guy who drove me back to my hotel after the show in salt lake-he had just gotten back from iraq about a year ago. he was in the first wave AND he's re-enlisting because he got bad grades and now has to pay his loan BACK to the army (jesus-what is he? playing football?)-even this guy is gonna vote for obama. this is the kind of guy that mccain's always talking about; the kind of guy who he's running for->white kid, iraq war vet, lives in salt lake city--should be a slam dunk. nu-uh, motherfucker. he knows the war is fucked-and he's not even afraid of it (he's fucking re-enLISTING!) but he still knows it's over-he knows it's gotta stop. or take my dad-he was in the army, he's about 5 years younger than mccain, he lives up in the middle of deerhunter/from/my/cold/dead/hands/middle/of/fucking/nowhere upper wisconsin--his words? 'things have gotta change'. apparently not all white males are afraid to vote for a black man (oh-and by the way-my mom? not so enamored with ms. palin). these are the middle american, salt of the earth types that the republican party is always pretending to speak for. the non-elitists. but that shit just doesn't seem to be flying anymore-and it makes me so proud that i could fucking cry. so, put away your passports all you leftys-you ain't going anywhere--i don't think EVERYone in middle america is on board the straight talk express. and when i'm cracking a cold one on thursday and sitting down to watch biden rip palin to shreds-i'm gonna be thinking one thing->godDAMN! i wish paul newman had made beer.

Me Again

you said it well my friend. i was at the Big Ass Show on Sat here in Salt Lake. before anything else, i must say that the crowd was a bunch of fucking zombies when you two played. definitely didn't give you the reception i was hoping for. you guys are amazing and thanks for playing for us.

i've lived in Salt Lake for about 5 years now, and in Utah altogether for about 15 years. i know very well what the republican party here is like. they're traditional about a lot of things. almost to the extent where you want to bang your head on a desk sometimes. nevertheless, they're some of the most caring and compassionate people you'll ever meet. that is if you're meeting a good ol' republican of the middle class or lower... (the rich righties out here can be a bunch of greedy conniving fucks)

i wouldn't go so far as to label myself as liberal. however i am pretty progressive about some things, and others not. that's not important though. in the last 2 years i've seriously contemplated bailing out of the country ASAP. it's been hard for me to feel like i have any common goals with this country and it totally bums me out. however, that's not completely accurate it seems...

like you though and your time of enlightenment through paul newman's death, i've come to a similar conclusion about political parties, the people of this country, and America as a whole. people are starting to pull their heads out of the fucking television and think for themselves. republicans and democrats alike are becoming aware of what's REALLY going on here in America as well as outside our comfy borders.

i heard on NPR about how tons of immigrants, some who have lived here for 10 years or more are finally taking the oath to become citizens. why now though? because they realize how important this upcoming election is and want to vote. THAT kind of shit brings a tear to my eye to be honest. FINALLY people are getting pissed. they're wanting change and know that the McCain/Palin ticket isn't going to take them there.

at times i still feel like running away from this good ol' US of A. i'm proud to be an American, but this last administration has made me hang my head in shame way too many times. there's more to life and living than making a quick dollar and fighting "terrorism" i.e. fighting for resources and power to facilitate more wars.

the "more" to life that i speak of are simple things like seeing a good live concert and joining fellow strangers to reach out and feeeeeel the music. scott, what you and brian do for a living is speak through your melody. as you are well aware, it touches people in ways never imaginable. keep doing what you do. ill keep doing what i do. and hopefully in time through everybody reaching out and within, we'll get somewhere together.
/clap - GO AMERICA!

cheers

America is on a downward slope into another great depression and the effected middle class is awake and ready to stand up for real liberty. Sadly, this stand up for a great change is not announced on your daily 5 o'clock news, but instead the bailing out of the asses of Wall Street. That is the way of capital America. What I am truly worried is that the savior, Obama cannot do a damn thing but preach about change. McCain, same problem. It sickness me that citizens roll with the punches and congress is deaf to the rest of us. Why they hell can we get our 700billion bucks? and not our sad $600 stimulus checks. That is they way cretin politicians look at the American public. Stupid sheep. Well I am not, and neither is anyone else. But I am not fighting for which party is right or wrong, because they both do a GREAT job not giving two shits about the little guy.

Also, Paul Newman was a great actor, and if he made beer it would have been the best.

I think its time for a drink.

We made a Paul Newman tribute in my video store. Half the people knew who he was, and half of THOSE people thought we were just trying to make a profit by displaying it. That's not what tribute's about, I said. Pride in one's own country should be solid. I'm glad something is building it back for you. You have powerful words.

Until today I was apathetic about who will win the election. I felt like my vote hadn't made a difference in the past, so I wasn't going to bother this time. Then I saw a bit of the vice presidential debate and started having my intelligence insulted by the Republican candidate who was trying to blow smoke up everyone's ass. So I've just requested my mail-in ballot.

Too bad, Mr. rEVOLution, RON PAUL, was lost in the shuffle of two people with war veteran money, racial cards to play, and various other specific demographics to attempt to appeal to.

Sadly, I don't feel like either of the two candidates are going to REALLY shake up the system, as the economic events of the last few weeks have indicated is ABSOLUTELY necessary. They will both merely play within it, which I truly think that both Obama and McCain made plain as day with their Vice Presidential choices. But I suppose it does boil down to the greater of two evils......a douche or a turd!

Politics aside, though, I can't wait to see you in Tempe next month, Scott! Shouldn't be as faded as at the Rhythm Room since "Paul Newman Porter" was never brewed!

While I agree with the passion in your words, I definitely think your backwards. All you liberals who think socialism is the answer in this country that has forgotten what it means to work hard to achieve should move to massachusetts, the socialist capital of the USA. Clearly you miss the point in the great things Paul Newman accomplished in his life, the things he worked hard with his own hands to bring about.

The answer isn't handouts, or taking from the people with the fortitude to work hard, the answer is working hard for yourself.

I think John McCain is an asshole too, but Barack isn't the answer. The real solution to the problems we face as a country come from the fact that too many people think they are owed something just because they were born, not because they earned it.

What we need as a country is a revolution. We need to stop letting ourselves be played against each other while fatcats on BOTH SIDES get richer and stronger on our blood, sweat and tears. They play us, then offer up, again and again, elections that are nothing more than a choice between the lesser of two evils.

What we need to do is make it so that our leaders are strong, true leaders, not settled for because what we really want we cant have. The sad reality is a great man like Paul Newman never could have run for president. That is the real problem in this country.

You have to admit, salad was pretty dull before his dressing came out. Yep, awesome actor and we're sad to see him go on this end too.

Sorry, gotta disagree about the Obama stuff. Ya ask me, it doesn't make a bit of difference who we vote for, they're all a bunch of do nothing crooks with personal agendas that don't include America or its people (That'd be us).
Yeah right, I'd like to see them do everything
(Or even a tenth) they promised the American people in their televised speeches and along their campaign routes. Good luck. I can't even remember the last time a President did anything that truly mattered to this country or its inhabitants. It's time America stood up for itself and stopped relying on these fuckin' dildos to lead them. I don't care if they're black, white, old, young, men, women or Goddamn some nationality that the guy next door doesn't care for. We've grown complacent and apparently blind as well. Is this really what it's come to? Let's hope for the best on this crapshoot - Maybe things will get better? Bullshit. Count me out. I'll write in a vote for Paul Newman. He might be dead, but I'll bet his ideas are alot fresher than what I've been hearing coming out of the mouths of incompetent, politically incorrect, mudslinging liars. The American People are just as bad as the idiots they're about to vote for. How many of you fucking ding dongs out there are touting you're Obama shirts because you're black or voted for Hillary or think McCain is the greatest because he's running beside Sarah Palin because you're a woman and that's what you want to see??? It's not only become a contest of "Let's elect the worst person we can and screw this country up a little more", now there's racial and sexist overtones thrown in for good measure. Bravo. Go vote and make a difference. The shepherds are waiting on their sheep.

Sorry, I had to speak my mind because I'm so completely fed up by it all. I'll shut up now.

HaHa! I don't remeber who said it but i think it was some English comedian, but yall did elect a retarded cowboy to run your country not only once but twice. I can feel the people of America yearning for change though when Bush comes out and says things like "we should vote for the republicans because there hasn't been a terrorist attack since 9-11". Fear mongering, scare tactic, weak excuse giving, economy shrinking fuckwits that are the republicans. As a resident of planet earth, a place so influenced by the decisions of your country, I pray that you can turn up in numbers to show the world the real american dream, which i imagine right now is to get Obama in and start doing things right. On a lighter note, how dumb is that Palin bitch! The whole of Australia is getting a big laugh out of her right now let me tell you.
