Ultravoilet, is being on DVD next week. I just screened a pre-street copy last night of it. This is the second time I've seen the film. I felt I should do a quick review while the blood is still fresh in my mind. No matter what I say at this point in time, I will say that I did like this movie.
OK. First thing to be noted about Ultravoilet: it is better than Aeonflux. Both are similar rebellion-like films, both take after the Matrix; the standard us against them, the few against the many, movie. But like Aeonflux, this a heroine takes the central role. Plot wise, the movie is reminiscent in the way people being treated as Jews were in World War 2, but here the persecuted are people infected with an altered strain of a Vampire virus, forced to go to treatment centers where they were never seen again. The film in the opening lookes like a sares convention with so many people wearing face masks and what not. This movie had excellent special effects, excellent fight choreography, undeniable. The technology they dreamt up for this movie is nothing short of amazing.. But the one bad thing about this movie is that they play down the fact that it is a Vampire movie. When I read Milla Jovavich s statement in Maxim (freatured along with her spread) that she was excited to finally be playing a Vampire for the first time, yet the term Vampire only comes into play only like 3 times during the whole film. Instead, they use the term hemo-phage throughout, which broken down means, Hemo: of the blood. Phage: a virus that is parasitic in bacteria. Of course, they say that this new virus HV is from an older existing virus, which is only alluded to but many times more contagious than the virus: rage in the movie 28 Days Later.
One critique of this movie is that it had too few colorful characters, the only strong ones being tje heroine and the villain. In fact the bad guy, was the strongest character if them all. Milla Jovovich, who makes a more than adequate female Vampire was still overshadowed by her supporting Vampire Garth. The kid named Six was solely cast for his wide-eye ability. An interesting note, is that there is no other female Vampires in the movie. Of course, the question naturally arises whether or not Ultraviolet s a legitimate Vampire movie In my eyes, it is. Because it does incorporate a majority of Vampire traits. Theres no biting, of course. But the infected are Vampiric with just about everything else. Notable Vampire traits found in this movie: fangs, mentions of sensitivity to light, augmented strength, speed, agility, hearing and vision. They use blood transfusions instead of the old fashion method, which defeated the purpose of having fangs. This movie was more sci-fi than dark. Its not your average Vampire film, but that was the aim of the director to make a different sort of Vampire film. Not much unlike Captain Kronos, because Hammer was shooting to make a different kind of Vampire film. Ultraviolet is very ultraviolent, there is a higher body-count in the end scene than all of Bloodrayne, but at least in this film there was nobody stabbed in the face. As far this DVD release is concerned, I will say there's not enough special features. There's definitely going to be a special edition, as this is the un-cut, unrated version anyway.
