Interstellar Overdrive EP - A Tribute To Syd Barrett

Enhanced CD out now through Third Ear Japan

Exclusive Japan release only

"In July 2006 the day Syd Barrett died, I knew it had to happen: to record a cover of Interstellar Overdrive.

After recording a few first versions, it became clear that it would be more fun to do it in a cooperation. So I  contacted my old friend from the golden Frankfurt-techno days early 90ies, Uwe Schmidt, aka Atom™. Uwe immediately liked the concept. We first of all discussed a concept for the project, and agreed on the following:

- no sixties-freeform-psychedelic-guitar-freakout version, as that was too obvious

- to divert from the grave psychedelic implications of the theme, we would include 2 "italian-cinecitta-spaghetti-tongue in cheek-soundtrack"-versions, because a) nobody would expect that, and b) we had planned to do a spaghetti-techno track together in the 90ies.

- no vocal tracks with lyrics. The choice of I.O. as theme for a Barrett-tribute seemed apt, as the riff includes all the ingredients of his guitar-style, from surf to folk to rock..n..roll and freestyle.

When Uwe had returned to his studio in Santiago de Chile, we began swapping samples, loops and ideas via internet over the following 2 years. Besides that, Uwe would drop by twice at our Frankfurt studio when on tour with his Senor Coconut show, and we would record and program together." (Gary Danner)

As always with Station Rose, audio and visuals are created at the same time at the same place. So when Atom™ and G.D. met for the first recording session to lay down the first tracks, loops and patterns in the Frankfurt studio, Elisa Rose immediately began to work on the video for the "Krautstep"-version, swapping ideas and inspiration between the three of them.

De:Bug, Germany 5/09, Multipara:

WIRE, UK 5/09, David Stubbs:

"(...) They describe the results unabashedly as Krautstep, a mix of Krautrock and Dubstep. Their version of this particular hybrid on the short version of this single is sleek and dry, with intimations of girders and linear striplights in urban underpasses, streaked with mild, nocturnal axiety. You have to squint pretty hard to make out the resemblance to the Floyd original, it has to be said, although it is there, almost as an arbitrary jumping point. The Krautstep idea is developed on a series of remixes and extended versions (...)"

Skug, Austria 5/09, Didi Neidhart:
