You won't find a larger supporter of animals than myself, so I have to include my two cents. Petitions are great...but they are STATE petitions. If I live in Michigan and sign a petition for a Georgia cause my signature will be dismissed, I don't live in Georgia (paying Georgia taxes) and it's not a federal petition. So you have to target persons living in the state the petition is meant for.

A lot of issues regarding putting pets down comes down on us, the owners. We are terribly irresponsible, admit it. Animals that run freely and are not "fixed", the simple "dumping" of pets that may be too troublesome for the owner to deal with...blah blah blah...it's our fault too. If we acted in better faith many of these petitions wouldn't be required.

Please sign the Petition for these poor 60 dogs. They only have less than 2 days to live. Please forward to everyone you know who may write a letter. We can make a difference for them !

Can you help PCRM end the dog lab at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW)? Every spring, the medical college uses 60 live dogs in a first-year physiology course. At the end of the class, the dogs are killed.

Labs like this were once common, but today more than 85 percent of U.S. medical schools have implemented humane and effective alternatives. MCW owns four state-of-the-art human patient simulators specifically designed to replace animal use for physiology teaching, so MCW president Michael Bolger could implement humane alternatives immediately.

Sixty dogs are slated to be used and killed in a live animal lab at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) in 11 days. Please join PCRM members and physicians for a demonstration to save these animals on Feb. 26—the day the lab is scheduled to begin. We will be joined by members of the Wisconsin Humane Society.

Protest:

What: Doctors lead peaceful demonstration at MCW
When: Mon., Feb. 26, 8:15 a.m.
The lab is scheduled to begin on this day.
Location: North 87th St. at MCW’s main entrance (between Watertown Plank Rd. and Wisconsin Ave.), Milwaukee
Parking: Please use public parking on Watertown Plank Rd. or other adjacent streets. Please carpool when possible.

Signs will be provided. Please make sure to dress warmly. No RSVP is required.

Can't Protest? Sign the Petition to stop the lab.

You have a heart of gold full of love! I rarely see anyone online doing what you are doing here.
It's awesome to give of yourself in helping these very important issues that effect our world.
Of course I'm signing those petitions, it's the least any of us can do to help out.
I sponsor animals through the feed the animals program for the no kill shelters locally.
I also own a cat named happy and a dog named clay, both of which would not be here if
I didn't step in and save them both. As it turns out both of these beautiful animals are the best I have ever owned up to this point. I believe they know I saved them and thats why they are so good. During the hurricanes here in florida I deliver food and clothes and water to areas that have been hit hard and those items are not available for those people to survive.
I started doing that the day after huricane andrew and never looked back.
The feeling it gave me was the best feeling I think I've ever felt about myself.
It also produced many friends that I still talk to and when in the area I stop and say hello.
I have pics of my dog Clay on my profile, which when you see him you'll know why I saved him.
Thanks for being my friend Alexa.
You Are Awesome !!!

Did you know Leona Helmsley donated $8 billion to animal care facilities?

Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust

The Humane Society of the United States and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said they will be suggesting programs and applying for funds if Helmsley's billions end up funding dog welfare.

"You could solve the pet overpopulation problem," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society. "You could attack dogfighting. You could attack rabies in China and India, where there are tens of thousands of cases a year. You could take care of dogs left behind in disasters."

Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder and president of PETA, said Helmsley's money "could make such a difference."

She said at least 3 million dogs are put to death each year for lack of spay and neuter programs.

"Many people cannot afford the surgery for their dogs," she said. "In these hard times, with house foreclosures, and people trying to pay for food and fuel, the last thing they're going to think about is the care and sterilization of dogs."

Pacelle noted that laws covering foundations generally require that a charity spend 5 percent of its assets per year. On an $8 billion estate, that would be $400 million -- three times the Humane Society's annual budget.

Now only if this would be done for people

Even if the resulting total is at the low end of the estimate — $5 billion or so — the trust will be worth almost 10 times the combined assets of all 7,381 animal-related nonprofit groups reporting to the Internal Revenue Service in 2005.

The American Veterinary Medical Association estimates that more than 43 million U.S. households, well over a third, own at least one dog. More than 3 million of us tuned in to the Westminster Kennel Club dog show this year. And Americans spent more than $40 billion on their pets in 2007 alone.

BOMBSHELL !!

Pet shelters are understaffed and overcrowded. Our few thousand operating shelters simply can't handle the millions of cats and dogs they see each year. It would certainly help if more of us adopted them. But, to put it in automotive terms, few people want a 10-year old Ford Escort. Most Americans would rather have a shiny new Mustang, BMW, or other "designer dog."

Shame on us. But the Helmsley billions have the potential to help countless dogs and cats in ways that have always seemed out of reach. More no-kill shelters. More shelter staff. Better spay and neuter programs. Financial aid for low-income Americans who want to foster an animal. And more effective ways to promote the moral imperative of rescuing unwanted dogs from a lonesome existence that is often far too short.

Sadly, the infrastructure needed to make these improvements on a national scale simply isn't there. America lacks a national umbrella group for humane societies and other pet shelters, a group that could put Leona Helmsley's money to work.

So far, two familiar national animal rights groups, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and the Humane Society of the United States have announced their intentions to claim big slices of the $8 billion bounty. But neither one has the track record to handle such a responsibility.

Look at how PETA has spent the money it already has: The group raised more than $30 million last year, and found adoptive homes for 17 animals. Just 17. Meanwhile, it killed 1,815 dogs and cats -- slightly more than the number of naked interns it sent out to "save" cows, chickens, and minks.

And although much of the public (and press) consider HSUS to be an actual "humane society," its record isn't any better. The group's name hides its lack of affiliation with any hands-on pet shelter anywhere in America. Of the $85-plus million HSUS spent in 2006, it gave only 4.2 percent to pet shelters.

Neither of these groups deserves additional millions. We just might need a new national organization to do the heavy lifting.

Now I may go on Larry King soon with my homeless veteran org and the one that helps the most will get their chance at 15 minutes

It's only a fraction put together but tells the story
http://homelessveteranangelsnetwork.com

So who wants to help clean up America's streets and house homeless veterans with me?
