Current mood:  determined

Hello Friends!

It's a Monday, and I'm latched on to my usual triple tall americano just like a baby to their bottle. I can't make it through a Monday at work without strong coffee. And especially today, because I was at my friend Rosie Thomas' wedding shower/party...which went from 3pm-12am. So, I'm a bit hungover (not much really) and fairly sleep-deprived. It was so worth it though. I laughed, I cried, I ate amazing food (thanks to our friend Jesse, who is a professional cook) and I danced the hours away. Ah, the good life.

Moving forward, I wanted to give y'all an update about the release of my new record! After months of sending it out to various labels, we have not gotten any offer for a record deal in the US. However, we've got offers from Japanese and European labels, which I am really really excited about.

Basically, I've had to make a tough decision (well, for me it is tough) to self-release my record in the US. What I've decided to do, is to press an initial 1,000 copies and then just take it from there. Maybe once those sell out (hopefully they do!) a label will come around and want to help us out, or if not, then I will just keep doing it myself, for the love of punk rock and embrace my DIY roots... which dates back to my Tattle Tale days. Once a punk rocker, always a punk rocker (even if I don't dye my hair weird colors anymore and don't have a nose ring).

So, here is my plan: I'm saving up my own money to press the initial 1,000 copies before the end of this year. I'm hoping for a Nov/Dec 2008 release date.

I'm also contemplating releasing the album online, where you can buy single songs or buy the whole album online. I most likely will also do that, for those of you who prefer that route better. Yay! I cannot wait for you guys to hear it! I am so proud of how it turned out and am anxious to hear how you all feel about it!

I'll keep you posted on details as they arrive.

In the meantime, I'm sending you my love and thanks. Your support and your faith in me, means the world.

Hugs,
Jen xoxoxo

Label shopping is such a pain. Especially with all the confusion of even trying for a distribution deal. At least doing it yourself you'll get all the money of the CD price yourself. On the other hand now you need to market it yourself too (or hire someone to do that). At the very least, get it hosted by the virtual services (iTunes, Rhapsody, Emusic etc.) because they can sell unlimited copies of your album without you needing to press more.

I'm sure the blogosphere will pick up your album once you get it online...cause it's wonderful from what I've heard so far.

I work for a company called RIPL that works with artists to get their content distributed. Slip me some Mp3s or a CD and we'll make you and artist page free of charge and try and get your content featured.

Hello Jen,

Its great about japan and europe, as for the US labels I think they are all scared and its because they all know that people like you can do it just the way they want, and on there own terms. Did I ever tell you about the last Maktub record, well to fund it they did a deal where 200 people joined the MARC7 Club, and these 200 people (yes Im am in their too) gave them 50 bucks toward the recording and got a signed copy a month before the release date.
http://www.maktub.com/marc7club.cfm

At any rate, what I was thinking is you could do a mini version of that, say 100 people and have them prepay for a signed copy and some other goodie like a t shirt for a set rate. Oh how about this the covers for the cd are silk screened limited edition and you also get a shirt with the same design also limited. We got blank black digi cd covers and that is how I did the last Phase3 cd. Came out very cool and I must say they are very punk rock (except its not a photo copy ) though thats how we did the liner notes.

I would love to share any more ideas if you want to talk about it some time.

Sounds like Rosie had a great party!

Cheers

David

I do mostly electronic versions. I rip and store the CDs when I buy them.

That said if you need help funding the CDs, let me know. (sent you a message about it)

Are you going to do the DIY in the US and still sign for a label in Europe or Japan and have them put out the cd on their territories?

If you're going to put it out on your own, seriously, plan everything carefully and when you have some money saved, artwork, masters - everything - completed, prices figured out and all and when you absolutely know you can get the albums pressed in certain amount of time: start taking pre-orders! When you can promise a release date and have decided on a price, there's no reason you couldn't do that. They would help you pay some/most/all of the productions costs.

I will pre-order the cd as soon as it's available and I know I'm not the only one. You could probably sell 10-200 copies easily this way, maybe even more. That should help a great deal with the initial costs.

To back up what David said, I would pay extra for a pre-order/signed copy album.
