Natalie and I went to see Lauryn Hill last night. Shit was dope. I was mad surprised to see D Sharp Djing with the band for her. I need to be like him when i grow up.

I was planning to do a recap anyways. but when i was taking a shower this morning, i heard hella people on the radio saying it was wack. Before i get all hyped and hiffy about dumb folks who just wanted to hear "Killing Me Softly" performed as it is exactly on the CD... let me try to be a little more articulate about this.

The opening group, Jupiter Rising was ehh. I think they had cool music. A cd might be a cool listening experience... but the lead singer had these jeans that went up to her breasts. Serious height on them. It was just kinda weird, im going to leave my fashion commentary out of this, but i just can't imagine pants that give you a deer hoof wedgie are all that comfortable... and the support vocals/beatboxer... he did so much beatbox scratching that he shoulda just been a dj. Overall Jupiter Rising had an energetic performance, but it's hard to really engage a crowd when being eclipsed by Lauryn Hill's shadow. Especially if the audience doesnt know your music.

An extended intermission of almost an hour definitely had an adverse affect on the crowd. (i suppose they had technical issues but neglected to let us know)

Of course the band came out first... warmed up, and started jamming. Lauryn Hill comes out over the speakers first from backstage and then enters from the left. Her opening song is one im supposing is from her new album/body of works how ever she releases it. Heavy reggae feel to it but it's uptempo and fun. This song lasts maybe 7 mins. and it's at this point i think people get kinda antsy to hear something they know, kinda understandable after such an extended intermission.

music cuts at the song end and L tries to get comfortable and asks the house to turn up her voice and cut the feedback she is hearing. i can appreciate this... she just wants us to have a good show.

then she goes into ex factor. i love this song. i think people however, didnt recognize it because the band did an interpretation of the instrumental and L Boogs sang it different. but eff it, this is Lauryn Hill! she is an artist and singing the song how she sees fit.

honestly i dont remember her full set list but it was a mingling of new stuff and interpretations of stuff she put out.

loosley the night sounded like:

new song
ex-factor
to zion
lose your self
how many mics
fugee la
ready or not
lost ones
final hour
killing me softly

and while the set list may look familiar, people may have had a hard time recognizing the songs. Lauryn had a full band composed of 3 backup singers, a dj, upright bassist, guitar, 3 drummers, 2 keyboardists, trumpet, and sax. All the members of the band seemed to be more than competent and full music professionals, so i figure that when you have that much talent onstage, things are going to sound different from a cd produced mostly on drum machines and keyboards.

It was disheartening to hear Oakland boo and some lady in my row screaming she wanted a refund.

to them, i say (and this is where i get a little less than polite):
Miseducation came out 9 years ago. NINE YEARS AGO. get the fuck over it. It's a dope album that is as relevant today as when it came out. But do you really expect an artist of L Boogie's calibre to stay the same? honestly
do you even really listen to music? the band was on point, and l boogie, while a little hoarse, was not off key... and really she has always had a bit of a raspy voice. to the people complaining about L's coarse and at times indecipherable lyrics... how can you say that it was all on her? did you not notice that every time she passed a speaker the microphone squelched and squealed? L has a full voice and it seemed like every time she wanted to utilize her range, the microphone would feedback. it just seemed that lauryn had to limit and adjust how she sang her music to an uncooperative microphone. pulling her punches so to speak.

to the people booing and asking for a refund, it's not your fault. after being inundated with pretty ricky and "ay baby bay" 24/7 on the radio, you just weren't ready for it. but to that, you need to get out and listen to some different shit. or at least, try and be open to different stuff. artists are artists because they produce art. if you arent interested in creativity, dont go to shows of people who care about pushing the limits of their craft. stay home and listen to the cd. [sarcasm]only buy music from people after it's been cosigned by MTV, BET, Maxim Blender, Vibe, The Source, XXL, and Rolling Stone [/sarcasm]

honestly, if you even really care about the opinions of those magazines/stations... i can't even talk to you.

if you really feel like lauryn fell off, figure this. why would she pull out such an extensive band when she could have had a monkey press fast forward on a cd player of instrumentals... fuck that she coulda had a cd of instrumentals just play, and sang over it, both satisfying people who just dont get it aaaaand taking home all that money and not having to split it.
you know, i woulda played the fake dj role and just ran her CD for FREE if i were asked. but Lauryn cared about her music enough to bring a full band and sing her songs as she saw fit.

Don't get it twisted and think im someone who doesnt get "mainstream" music either... as a dj i listen to everything, and hoodstars and lil wayne gets solid rotation next to biggie and of course L Boogie... it is in my humble opinion that people should just listen to everything and be open to.. or rather demand, higher music standards from mainstream music outlets so the next time you see L Boogie, you wont be so shocked is she wants to do a dubbed out(lee perry dub not clear channel censor) rendition of To Zion.

I'd like to tell everyone complaining booing and being rude to go play in traffic after running with scissors. But im too polite for that.

*post edit. Maybe I had the advantage of being in row E. it's a possibility that people in the back and on the balcony had a completely different experience from me. In that case, blame the sound engineer. I heard that while I felt I could hear most of her vocals, a lot of other people couldn't.

Hey BJ, nice recap! I was bummed that I couldn't make it to her show, but not as bummed as hearing how her performances have been as of late! And reading what you just wrote, definitely makes it even more clear as to why I wanted to see Erykah Badu rather than Lauryn Hill. When I heard about Lauryn Hill having a show, I was really excited to go until I remembered what I had read about her performances in previous months! You can check it out HERE . And when I heard Erykah Badu was also having a show 3 weeks before hers, I was stuck on deciding if I wanted to see Ms. Hill or Ms. Badu! Unfortunately, I didn't see either one, but to be honest, I wanted to see Erykah Badu more (basing the previous reviews I had read about Ms. Hills performances lately)!

Like I mentioned before prior to her show in Oakland, I heard previous reviews of shows she's done in the past couple months and it was pretty harsh and disappointing! When I read that, my heart dropped! I knew that she was going through a lot during her hiatus. After going through that whole ordeal, you have to understand that it really put a strain on her musically, mentally and physically! It's not easy to go through what she had gone through and come out of that unscathed, you feel me?! Not a lot of people KNOW the struggles she went through during that time she was away from the music scene! But from what I've read and heard in the past, it was pretty deep! And if people really even KNEW that, then they can probably empathize greatly from everything that went wrong in her shows! You should check out the song Talib Kweli did called, "Miss Hill" and you can get an idea whatsup with that as well! And if you have ever watched that documentary of Dave Chappelle's Block Party, it really showed how much it took a toll on her! I knew right then and there that she kinda lost a bit of her soul when she performed! Hearing her voice crack and a bit off and seeing her so painfully skinny made me realize how much she had gone through! And that is why it may have affected her performance and her skillz in general!

And yeah, I hear ya! I totally agree! Some people expect too much of an artist sometimes and they hate from the get-go which I think is a bunch of BS if that person(s) is actually pretty dope, you know?! People need to stop seeing people for ONE act and see them as a WHOLE...person that is! She's an amazing and gifted and talented artist and these bad reviews will NEVER make me see her in a different light, but I will be honest with myself and know that things have changed!

I have to admit, I'm as honest as they get! An example of this honesty is like when a dj homie of mine asks me to review one of their mixes. And if it's wack, I'm gonna tell them it's wack regardless if they're my homie or not! Just because they're my homie, I'm not gonna go and sugacoat it and say it was DOPE when it was really WEAK! Being honest with you friends is what keeps you friends right? Besides, why would I even lie to a homie when that could easily compromise his reputation as a dj? And to me, I think that's the kind of HONESTY people need to put out there in regards to things that matter most to them! You feel me?!

And that's the case with Ms. Hill! I love and respect her, but if she hasn't been performing well as she used to, then ima speak on it and not deny it just cause everyone says so or because they don't want to be hated on for saying so!

And you also have to think about it this way like any other artist that performs, there are some who are WACK live and some who aren't. I guess it's just a big deal to some people how it went down with Ms. Hill's performance given the fact that Ms. Hill has always been a dope performer/artist! You know? Some people may have hated cause they don't know any better because like you implied, they're just a bunch of mainstream radioheads who don't know what real music is OR it could also be because some who were disappointed because they've seen her live before and it wasn't up to par! You can't assume everyone that may have criticized her show, to be all from one MAINSTREAM RADIO LISTENING crowd, because who knows, some of those people who may have been disappointed were major music heads (or even Wycelf Jean) who knew what they were talking about!

I really can't speak on it cause like I said I wasn't there. It's just that there's always room for speculation and criticism for her type of caliber because she IS a musical icon! But what I was trying to point out is that she is/was NOT a bad artist, but going from what I have seen from the Dave Chappelle movie and from I have heard from critics from her performances lately, I understand that she may not perform as well as she used to! And people have taken notice! That's all! Sometimes we just have to respect that fact that things change and no matter what, you have to accept that! I still consider her my fave artist of all time, but I don't think I was gonna pay that much for a ticket....maybe if it was 8-10 years ago! =/

Despite everything, I still think that BOOing incident was uncalled for! It really saddens me and a bit ashamed that it came from so-called Lauryn Hill fans! *shakes head* That's just very disrespectful!

But overall Shayboogs got major love and respect for LBoogs....WORD!

But no doubt, I still have madd love for her! You just have to admit that things aren't what they used to sometimes!

Peace!

Really, really good review, BJ! So, I totally wanted to go when I heard she was going to be in town. DnZ mentioned your review so I thought I'd check it out. I'm really heartbroken over the fact that Oakland boo'ed her and especially that chick demanding a refund. You make very valid points of opinion here. Too bad people aint knowin. She's still one of my idols no matter what. Thanks for the review!

BTW, I wish I coulda been that monkey that pressed FFW on the CD player if she didn't have a band...=T

i agree... the people who are sooo use to what the cd sounds like weren't really there for her... my friend, her friend, and i were talking about it... and we felt that she did what she did to weed out those who were there for her and who were there for her mainstream music... i personally enjoyed myself... loved "lose yourself"... and everything and anything she did... but thats just me...

i was sitting at balcony... and when i turned around, half the people were gone... felt bad for her... but its on those folks... paying however much they paid... and then bouncing not even half an hour of her set... but hey... thats on those folks...

kae thats my two cents... heehee... ttyl... take care love ya!! =)
