All I was doing was taking the train downtown to pick up my 335 from Rudy's repair shop. Often when I go to 48th St. I really don't want to go into the stores. Manny's and Sam Ash are just nightmares of noise and hype and attitude but Rudy's is different. The problem with Rudy's is that you spend top dollar on anything you buy there but they have lots of great super expensive vintage guitars to look at (just in case you win the lottery- right after getting a parking space for the car). They also have good new stuff. The repair shop is actually in another building so I didn't have to go into the store but that particular day I thought, oh what the hell I'll just go in for a minute.

So in I go and I see this guitar on the wall, a new Gibson ES 336. I had been wanting to check one out and this was the first one I had ever seen except for pictures online. I thought OK why not try it? So the guy there hooked me up into some nice amps and I start playing it and thinking, well this is pretty nice. This feels pretty good and hmm this sounds really good and boy it's really in tune and I just kept playing and thinking am I really going to do this?

So obviously I did do that and I totally love this guitar. It's similar to my 335 in shape- the body size is smaller and the neck feels like a combination of 335 and Les Paul. It also just sounds really good- I'm usually a reverb addict but I have to say that this guitar straight into an amp with nothing else is pretty nice. It's also beautiful and did I say I really love it? It's amazing to me that Gibson is making such great new instruments. It wasn't cheap but for reasons I won't go into now I regard it as a last gift from my Mother. Anyway I'm really pleased.......now I just gotta work on how to play it.....

Jamie,

When I met you at the Jen Chapin show late last year 2007, I went up to you and incorrectly referred to your guitar as a 335. It was great talking to you later in the show. I've recently made the move back to a 1971 Gibson ES-335 Walnut. I've recorded with it recently, trading between this and my later Gibson SG standard. No comparison whatsoever. I don't know exactly what it is, but the tone I get from this guitar is so smooth and the texture is deep. It must me the pickups from that era, but I don't know. I haven't had a chance to play a 336 yet, but your comments are making my curiosity take hold. I also noticed you were playing a smaller valve amplifier but it was a great sound. It amazes me how such a minimal setup gave you such an extroidinary sound. With all the amp modeling these days, I actually travel with a smaller older solid state Fender 85 amp. I used to travel with my Roland Jazz Chorus. I still love that amp, but dislike carrying it around because it is so heavy. What I have done is use my Line 6 Pod XT Live with it's Roland JC modeling and get a pretty fair representation of it, as long as the Fender is set to a pretty flat frequency band, but again watching your setup is making me re-think if I should get a small tube amp and just mic it.

Anyway, still enjoying your CD and enjoying your work with Jen as always.

Hi David,

Thanks for your comments, I'm glad your 335 is doing it for you. I would definitely give a tube amp a try- they are a little more trouble but worth it in my opinion. Hope to see you soon and good luck with your music!

Jamie ~ we met when Jen was at NightTown in Cleveland Hts a few years back. And then again at the Winchester.  Which means I know your ability and should leave 'guitar talk' alone.  But, lacking the good sense to heed my own admonishment, I kinda shared your experience.  Particularly the part about "am I really going to do this?"

Like you, I don't much care for the constant NOISE of Sam Ash and/or Guitar Center (how many times can you hear bad renditions of Stairway ...?) but on one occasion, a local GuitarCenter wanted acopy of my cd for some acoustic event they were having.  And in the interest of self promotion I agreed to drop one off.

On the way out I checked out the many chinese jazz boxes.  They weren't near as bad I thought they might me.  But it didn't matter  I couldn't afford the $350 they we asking anyway.  As I turned to leave, I looked up high on the wall ~ out of the reach of children~ I spied a Gibson es165.  And it was cheap!  $1350!  I laughed at how easily I made a thousand dollar jump  AND found it to be reasonable.

That was on a Friday.  I went back the following Monday and it was still there.  They amped me up in a small private room and before long, "I couldn't believe I was about to  ... "   It took me less than an hour to decide to take the leap.  It's a beautiful 1996 Herb Ellis model, in mint condition with original case.  While my playing skills fall short,  the axe itself fits my songwriting style well.  Later on I found out what a very good deal I got on it.  Wishing you well ~ jim
