Former national soca monarch Raeon ‘Maddzart’ Primus, celebration
ten years in the Carnival industry, secured the first of what he hopes
to be many titles, when he was crowned the new Ragga Soca Monarch on
Friday June 26, 2009.
Primus, band leader of the band
Madd Symphony, out -performed 14 other hopefuls, including two of his
other band mates, to ascend to the throne left vacant by last year’s
winner Dani O, when she decided not to defend the title.
Performing
his catchy hit ‘Is Me Friend’, Maddzart did enough to stay ahead of
Danielle Veira (singing Ah Want Me Soca), who took the second position
and third placed Shernell ‘Skarpyon’ Williams (Soca Love), as the first
official event on the Carnival Development Corporation’s calendar of
activities blasted off at the Victoria Park in fine style.
Maddzart,
who won the Soca Monarch title in 2003, is hoping to recapture that
crown this year, as well as the highly coveted Road March title.
He
lost out in this year’s New Song Competition to current Road March King
Icon, who with his Ragga song Teaser failed to make Friday’s top three.
The
other artistes in the Raga Soca finals were Troots and Ice, Tabia, Full
Clip, Squitty, Zolah,Tamisha Nichols, Radikal, G wise and Oscar,
Elegance, Lady D and D Landlord.
