paintings and work on paper

Thursday 8 January – Tuesday 2 February

@ Au Fil du Vin

Neil Sparkes: artist, poet, musician and music producer whose work engages with visual, literary and popular culture.

Neil Sparkes is eclectic. His work is influenced by his travels through Cuba, Mexico and Africa. Densely worked collages to visionary watercolours, layers of complex emotions and intense examination influenced by a fascination with the human condition. Masks, faces of friends, musicians and musical motifs populate his world. Line, colour, imagery, collecting inform and inspire his art. His artwork interacts with, and influences his music and poetry. Intricate and iconic imagery celebrates the world which we inhabit.

Unique among his contemporaries as a poet who moves from the page to performance, he has placed his poetic work in the cultural context of popular music.  As a musician and producer Neil is a master of collaboration. He has worked with Peter Gabriel, Natacha Atlas, The Stranglers, Jah Wobble, Los De Abajo, Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwali (nephews of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan), Adrian Sherwood, Hossam Ramzy, Linton Kwesi Johnson and Claude Challe amongst many others.

His literary work includes several collections of poetry published by Billy Childish's Hangman Books. Neil's latest ventures are LoungeClash, presenting a combination of 21st Century Lounge, Electronica and Dub and BougaraBou, the brand new percussion ensemble formed by Ben Baddoo, master drummer from Ghana and Neil Sparkes.

globalhead, paintings and work on paper features new and existing works that highlight the fascinating physicality and breath of Neil Sparkes range as an artist. Neil graduated from Goldsmiths in 1989, under the tutorship of Patrick Hughes and Michael Kenny. This continues Neils series of exhibitions in France with A.N.P.Q.
