Mon2 just may get that wish. 2007 looks like it could be a giant year for hip-hop in Athens, maybe even hip-hop in general. With T-Nebula on deck as well as other artists like Son1, Elite (with a summer banger of an album in progress), Travis Williams (who just recently pressed up what I hear is a very informational mixtape), Static Y Mizza, Nobody Famous (who's bound for Los Angeles in March, but promises to come back often, you better!), Mystro, others not mentioned from this show as well as yours truly grinding harder than ever, 2007 is looking GOOD!
Now let's talk history, let's talk about how ATHfactor coupled with T-Nebula made "fire-code" for this show and sold it out. It has been a minute since something like that has happened. I can not remember even when the last time it actually "did" happen. Let's also mention the 30 to 50 people that waited and stood outside and didn't even get in. "Hey hip-hop, you feel special yet?" The smoke is only now starting to clear from such a show.
Everybody that performed that night could have easily lead their own concert. If hard rock/metal has their Summer Sanitarium tour, then this was the hip-hop equivalent in January. Brian Fine as Wine was explosive, Static Y Mizza were fire, Nobody Famous was lava, Son1 was fireworks (either that, or multiple weapons of mass destruction), Travis Williams was the spark that ignited intelligent thought and gave it to man, Mystro was the sun but the star of the show was of course Bear. Bear at this event was fucking Prometheus! But let us not forget, other T-Nebula family members Fly, Ben Stephens, and "industry veteran " Nolan Terrebone were the arms and legs that helped Promethus become Bear A.K.A. "Tha Stackman."
Bear's performance was incredible. It rocked, it rolled, it did lyrical backflips. When low frequencies hit hard enough to upset instrumental discs, and it still can't get the performer offbeat for even a second, I'd say you have encountered a professional emcee of a performer. Massive props to Street Heat for keeping things entertaining. Respect to Fly for being as soulful as they come, to Ben Stephens for that strong vocal power, and to DJ Killacutt (although I didn't really see ya, I know you were behind the scenes doing something, I could feel the prescence ), and to Nolan for getting up onstage again just for the love of "doing the damn thang." T-Nebula seems to be getting stronger and stronger. This show was hot in so many ways. From the history to the performances to just the triumph of come-uppance of Athens hip-hop, this show has launched a major stepping stone for other artists to follow.
Big ups and respect to Mon2 for being "my favorite hip-hop host" and to DJ Bulldawg Purp for holding it down. Special thanks to Jaero for the "Beginning of the Takeover" mixtape and to everyone that has patiently waited for so long for this article. Yesterday was the "Rhythm Factor" Breakdancing (Big ups to Bgirl K8 and Johnny Blaze on that one) competition and although I couldn't make it (still fighting bronchitis, I need to slow down a bit ) I would like everyone to know I was there in spirit. Someone please tell me how it went and who won. Also, yesterday it seems Badkat, Son1, and Mystro are doing their own share of "big things" and taking the show on the road as they performed at The Emerald Lounge in Ashville, N.C. Hope things went well and you guys "shut it down" in Norf-cak. The next big date in the book for B. is Mantooth's "The Insurgency" show at Tasty World for coverage. After that B. is planning on taking a small sabbatical on the coverage to finish a few matters of personal interest so bear (lol haha, I said Bear, get it….nvm ) with me.
