Why can't we ever stop pursuing a better tone? It just never ends. Not only does the music have to be new but the equipment constantly evolves as well. I grew up on a Les Paul and it had a "fat sound" that was perfect for ZZ Top type sounds. Then SRV came along and I loved that sound. So I bought a Stratocaster and set out to get that single coil spank. Now, I want both and I want my own sound. Development of your own sound happens naturally through your hands. The way you play and the way you use your hands really determines your sound no matter what gear it goes through. For example, I've heard Stevie playing a Humbucker guitar through someone elses rig and it still sounded like him! It took me a long time to develop adequate guitar chops. Some guys do it immediately. However, I think it takes lots and lots of hours for anyone to develop their own sound.
I can hear one note by Derrick Trucks and immediately tell that it's him. Clapton, SRV, BB, Bonamassa and others, same thing. I have reached a point where I'm going to play with whatever sound fits the song, whether fat humbucker, bell tone single coils, etc. I'm also going to just let the music that comes out, come on out. I'm not going to write structurally for one particular genre. I've always done this but felt a little restricted. I mean listen to the difference in Butterfly, Del Rio, Montana, and songs like Comes from the Heart, Smoke Filled Room, and Holiday.
I'm just rambling because I'm excited. We have reached a level where people request the songs I have written. I rarely get request for Mustang F'ing Sally, Freebird, or the like and I consider that some success. The point is, however, that people want to hear what comes out of an artist naturally without restrictions. If it's true and honest, it connects and that is what excites me. Stand by and bear with me because our next album is going to be a whole new realm.
Thanks for supporting live music and standing by us for the last 7 years. I can only imagine what will happen in the next 7. I've sacrificed a lot for this pursuit and it's always worth it when we get overwhelming support and appreciation from people that like the music. That is why we do it!
Thank you so much!
