I've been dealing with this issue for a few weeks now, and I need to vent. When I was at RT last year I took a picture of two other conference attendees. I emailed them the pic after I uploaded it to an online photo storage account. (I might have mailed them actual hard copies too... I don't remember.) Well it turns out I saw a post on a Yahoo Group from one of the people in the pic I took... saying she had won $500.00 in some online photo contest somewhere. Included in the post was the winning photo and guess what?? Yep, it was the same photo I took!!
My initial reaction was surprise because this person who entered the contest is also an author, so I know she is very familiar with copyright laws. That she would go ahead and use my pic without permission truly threw me. I tried to contact this author by email and she wouldn't respond. I sent her a message through MySpace and I know she read it yet never answered. I called the other person in the pic and explained everything to her. She told me she told this author to contact me to resolve this issue, but so far I haven't heard a thing.
Now, in my mind her not responding to me screams to me her acknowledgement of her guilt. If she truly thought she owned the copyrights of this pic there would be no reason for her not to contact me and straighten it out. I think she thinks that if she ignores me that this will all go away... but that is farthest from the truth. This is not over... not by a long shot.
