To all those that love San Marvelous:

Today I was informed of some very disturbing news, and after visiting Prospect Park, the bad news was confirmed; the city is in the process of building a 4 lane highway directly THROUGH Prospect Park. It has already been barbed wired off and the land has been cleared for the new road. However, they have not begun paving.

Prospect Park is a recharge zone for the Edwards Aquifer. The Edwards Aquifer is a body of water underground that supplies us with DRINKING water and CREATES the San Marcos River. Prospect Park is considered to be extremely porous, meaning that any water or runoff of any kind in the park makes it's way directly into the aquifer. So what kind of chemicals do you want in your drinking water? Or in the water you swim in?

The building of a new highway will leave behind industrial debris, litter, and oil residue. Once the highway is completed, it will continue to pollute the park with trash, oil runoff, and other contaminates. And with the highway comes the inevitability of more development, ex. gas stations, fast food restaraunts, etc. Do you really want a Taco Bell where you used to hike?

This planned development is absurd and should be stopped! San Marcos is a beautiful town whose river and aquifer should be guarded and preserved. San Martians should not stand for this! Unfortunately no one seems to know about the city's intentions to contribute to the spoilage of a beloved natural phenomenon.
WE NEED TO ACT FAST!!!!!!! Join me in telling everyone you know about this outrage!! We need to stand together and let city council know we won't endure this! Until a designated date has been decided to confront city council, TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS DISTURBANCE!! REPOST THIS!!! CALL YOUR FELLOW SAN MARTIANS!! SPREAD THE WORD!!!

I spoke out about this during the election but was corrected regarding miles of fast-food and box stores: Most of the development on the road will be low density - the lowest category of such in fact. And you'll always have the Purgatory Creek Greenspace right down the road (at the western-most end of Franklin) if you want something that is not as wheelchair friendly as Prospect. Hardly a nature trail there IMO. However, I am ticked that they put up the barbed wire, and it is disappointing to see cement trucks lurking like land sharks out in the park. This way though bicycles will not have to contend with the big heavy trucks that otherwise have been using rr12 and hopkins to get to wonderworld and out to 35. Disappointingly the city looked to cut corners by nixing the bike lane. It's funny because the big beautiful sign at the front of it pictures two bikes! It also has a KBR logo on it which is ominous considering the cost of the road will be paid for by the state based on usage. So they'll be watching...
