SIX GALLERY - BREAKTHROUGHS IN MODERN ART
Six Gallery
Having been around since 2005 in various musical genres, and released two EPs, Columbus’ Six Gallery have finally gotten it together to record their debut full-length: ‘Breakthroughs in Modern Art’, after nine months in the making. The LP managed to survive various equipment malfunctions, and even the theft of various hard-drives, on which it was both stored and backed up.
As a commentor[sic] on the band’s Last.FM page expressed, the fact that this band seem completely unheard of seems bizarre given the production quality of their recordings. They sound as if they should be touring nationally with massive acts, or at least be more established than they are.
Their recorded sound is both tight and impressively large, it’s not just pure technical bells and whistles that make them sound good – the noodley guitar lines swim over the tracks in a way that only serves to confirm that there are people who can play guitar, and then people who can really play guitar. It doesn’t seem to be too convoluted or arrogant either, which is a whole other feat in itself.
I didn’t expect to like this album much – this sort of post-prog-whatthe-rock stuff doesn’t tend to hold my attention to any great degree; engaging more in musical wankery and clichéd soul moments than anything of great value; but I did. It was endearing, along the lines of Minus the Bear meeting Incubus and having a friendly sing-song over a couple of beers; possibly a coffee.
You can check out their video about the making of the album here.
And their Myspace here.
and an MP3 of ‘Just Hey’ from the LP here.
