WEDNESDAY'S PICK: JAZZ LUNCH TRIBUTE AT THE SQUARE ROOM
About the two jazz greats being honored today: “Tenor saxophonists John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins were among the 20th century’s most important American musicians. They both developed very distinctive sounds on the tenor saxophone as well as unique approaches to improvisation. They both arrived on the New York scene in the 1940s, and their sound and influence began to take hold in the mid-1950s. John Coltrane was famous for his big sound, enormous technical facility, searing intensity and innovations in modal improvisation. Sonny Rollins was famous for having an incredible sense of swing, uncanny musical wit and a unique motif-based improvisational approach.” The Knoxville Jazz Orchestra will continue its ongoing “Jazz Lunch Series” today with a tribute to Coltrane and Rollins. Featuring the Bill Scarlett Quartet, the performance will highlight several of their important compositions like “Doxy,” “St. Thomas,” “Niama,” and “Moment’s Notice,” as well as standards that they famously recorded like “The Way You Look Tonight” and “On a Misty Night.” | 11 a.m. today | WHERE: The Square Room, 4 Market Square, downtown Knoxville | HOW MUCH: $15
