FRIDAY'S PICK: LORD T. AND ELOISE AT THE VALARIUM

Last year, we profiled a most unusual hip-hop outfit — Lord T and Eloise, returning to East Tennessee tonight. Technically, the can be classified as hip-hop artists; in reality, they’re the purveyors of “Aristo-crunk,” an intoxicating blend of street and cobblestones, of old school and Old World, of spectacle and entertainment and witty wordplay wrapped up in velvet robes straight out of a Dickens novel. “We are but humble poet-warriors from the wealthiest family known on earth,” Eloise told The Daily Times back then. (Editor’s note: Robert Anthony opted to do the interview in character as Eloise — a k a Maurice Eloise XIII — while Lord T, a k a Lord Treadwell, unmasked himself to do the interview as his alter-ego, Memphis studio hound Cameron Mann.) “We have been summoned here to perform rap music by a random message in a bottle of liqueur that washed up on our shores. It summoned us to Memphis, where we’ve studied under some of the greatest crunk-rappers of the underground, and now we’re ready to take to the masses our missives on antique furniture, art and capitalism.” | WHEN: 9 tonight | WHERE: The Valarium, 940 Blackstock Drive, Knoxville’s Warehouse District | PERFORMING WITH: Al Kapone | $10 at the door

SATURDAY'S PICK, PART 1: PETE HUTTLINGER AT THE PALACE THEATER

We interviewed guitar maestro Pete Huttlinger this time last year, and we found him to be a natural people person -- friendly, affable, quick with a joke or a wry observation. That’s a good thing, because it’s only half the battle when Pete Huttlinger walks on stage. The rest of it unfolds when he strums that first chord, drawing concert-goers into a world so fascinating you’d swear that he has a doppelganger in the shadows, accompanying him. “The challenge is always with the instrument,” Huttlinger told The Daily Times then. “I’m sort of a natural people person. I’m comfortable getting up and talking and leading audiences to where I want them to go. But playing guitar, every day is a new battle. I pick up my weapon, which is my flatpick, and go into battle against this 6-string guitar every time I sit down to play.” And play he has — for everyone from the late John Denver, for whom he worked for several years, to numerous guitar contests. He’s a regular here in Blount County, and you can check him out this weekend. | WHEN: 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 | WHERE: The Palace Theater, 113 W. Broadway Ave., downtown Maryville | $13 advance/$15 at the door

SATURDAY'S PICK, PART 2: PETER MAYER IN OAK RIDGE

A folk singer, songwriter and guitarist by trade, Peter Mayer was once a priest in training with the Jesuit order. Since leaving the clergy in 1987, he’s continued to hone his craft and gain acclaim among a devoted group of followers and the music world. He began touring full-time in 1995, and today performs 130-plus shows a year. His numerous accolades include a 1998 and 2001 Minnesota Music Award nominations for Best Folk Artist and a past nomination for Best Male Songwriter. He also received nominations for best Folk Album for his first and third records. His records have been played on dozens of radio stations across the country and he has sold over 30,000 copies. He’s been a finalist in numerous songwriting contests including those at Telluride and the Rocky Mountain Folks Fest in Colorado, and has since been employed as a songwriting instructor at the Rocky Mountain Songschool. Today, he writes songs about the inter-connectedness and the human journey and the beauty and mysteries of the world. Go see him this weekend. | WHEN: 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 | WHERE: The Grove Theatre, 123 Randolph Road, Oak Ridge | $12 advance/$15 at the door

SUNDAY'S PICK: CHILI COOK-OFF AT WORLD'S FAIR PARK

To prepare for Sunday’s event, you should probably fast on Saturday. Seriously. Because with 40 teams scheduled to compete at the Fourth Annual East Tennessee Chili Cook-Off on Sunday, you’ll need a stomach devoid of content if you want to sample it all. And there’s more to do than  just eat chili — there’s a zone of inflatables just for kids, and plenty of live music throughout the day — including a couple of groups with Blount County ties. On the stage: Keith Ford at 1:45 p.m.; One Step Up (featuring Hannah Dauven and Robert Higginbotham) at 2:45 p.m.; The Dirty Dougs at 5 p.m. and FreeQuency at 6:15 p.m. For more information, visit http://etnchilicookoff.com. | WHEN: 1-7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8 | WHERE: World’s Fair Park, downtown Knoxville | HOW MUCH: $10 (children 12 and younger are admitted free)
