Who Gives Kudos:

Thursday, February 15, 2007

I just wanted to share my thoughts on the friendly played or as I originally called it The Overrated vs the Underachievers.

Spain played a decent game with a lot of beautiful passing and a crack of a goal by Iniesta.  Decent, but not great.  Fortunately England was piss poor.  I actually was hoping España would lose so that the old coot Aragones would get fired, but no.  Well maybe McClaren will get the axe soon.  That would be great.  Both coaches are a disgrace to their national teams, federations and leagues.  At least España brought a good, solid team and were playing to win.  This win will be build confidence and pride.  The England players were all trying to come up with excuses not to participate with last minute withdrawals or "injuries".  Or at least this was how it appeared to me.

Players of the match - from Spain - several including Puyol, Albelda, Pablo, Capdevila, Xavi, Iniesta, and Villa.

Players of the match from England - none really.  I thought both Stevie G and Rio were ok.

All in all a very interesting, psychological game.  One playing to win, the other letting down the fans once again.

Kudos for the blog post Elisa, think of it as prelude for the podcast. I too think that Spain were their typically unfocused selves, but England were disgraceful. Gerrard and Lampard don't play well together and I'm starting to believe that Lampard needs to sit. They lack Rooney's inventiveness to link up with the midfield and some ballwinners behind Gerrard. They have injuries to King and Terry and they miss their veteran leadership, but what they need most of all is skill.

These just aren't the quality players that can compete internationally. I'd sit the Neville sisters, Crouchie and Lamps and bring in some of the talent that's starting in under-21's. Frankly, it looks like they'll miss Euro 2008.

Armando agreed, it is highly likely that both teams will miss Euro 2008.  They don't have the passion, wherewithal or coaching strength.  Both FAs don't have the balls to make any change as well.  Lampard may be on form with his club, but he is a shadow of himself internationally.  I am sorry but JT, does not have the charisma or characterstics that a captain needs yet.  Bring back Becks.  The fans, media, even McClown have mentioned Becks and a possible return, but it will never happen unless the players speak up.  Unfortunately, they are cowards and only think of themselves now, instead of the team.  Which will cause a downward spiral in the national team.  It's great to have the "best" league in the world and league of stars, but when it is detrimental to the development of youth and the national team, then it is a problem.  The same applies to Spain.  At least Aragones has finally dropped Raul and some of his old cronies but he needs to do more as well.  He needs to bring back Vicente and the players in form and give the youth a chance.  He needs to play those who participate in club football abroad, like Alonso, etc. No untouchables and no favoritism, please.
