After next week, I won’t be doing a weekly comic for gURL.com anymore. It pains me to do it, but financial difficulties, especially those generated by my jaw and self-employment taxes, make it nigh on impossible to live my dream anymore.

It’s a new life. I loved making comics for a living, but it was just too hard to keep making them when I was constantly worried about my security. I hope you can understand. Thank you for reading as long as you have. You made me feel like a star, no matter how small or how briefly, but a star nonetheless. I thank you.

Sometime mid-May I hope to start doing bi-monthly comic for gURL. I have to finish my Rachel-Sparrow storyline. I was going in a particular direction with it, and I don’t like leaving loose strings hanging. Rachel’s got a love interest, and we finally know that Sparrow isn’t just a bitch but has horribly low self-esteem. There is so much left unsaid!

If you donated money to help with my jaw and want to retract your offer, I understand. I won’t be self-employed much longer, and if you feel cheated that your donation is no longer supporting a struggling comicker’s quest for a straight jaw but now just a struggling young person’s quest for said jaw, I will understand. Drop me a note, and I can refund your donation with the click.

What makes me feel most terrible is that I get all these emails from girls telling me that I’ve inspired them to make comics and that I’ve shown them that they can make their dreams a reality. I feel like I’ve let them down. I’m so sorry. You should not give up making comics. I will not. The world may not be ready to support many full-time chick comickers, but it’s close. Please do not give up on your dreams.

Details
I had actually started investigating getting a real job before Joe proposed, so this has nothing to do with my future wedding. Like I said, it’s all finances. At the end of the year, I just could not make the numbers work. So I will no longer be the girl who makes comics for a living. Now I will be the girl who designs sites/graphics and does comics as a hobby.

But I try to look on the bright side. You can’t make comics about life unless you’ve lived, and at least now I’ll have a solid hobby instead of "being my job". And once I’m in Raleigh, I can start getting my jaw fixed! (I’m really excited about starting the two-year stint.)

I spent most of this week in Raleigh, job hunting and moving stuff in. I should be fully moved-in by the 7th of April. It will be a strange new land, far from the bosom of my mountains, far from my dog and my mother and my friends. It will be very scary and probably lonely, even though I’ll have Joe. (You wouldn’t happen to live in Raleigh, would you?)

Men complicate everything. I had a nice job lined up here until he proposed! Then I had to carefully weigh my options. He lives in Raleigh. Should I stay, wait, go? In the end I chose to move to Raleigh because there are more design jobs and more opportunities for education and advancement there. Unfortunately, it’s also hot and a commuter community, which means I’ll have to drive a lot. I dislike that immensely. I hate cars, I hate driving. It’s like throwing out an hour of your life every time you get in one. I will need many books on cassette tape (not CD, my car is from 1995, yo) to console me.

But I hope to move closer to wherever I will work so I might not have to commute. And some day I may even have a motorcycle again, to further help with gas.

So that’s it. I feel like it’s the end of an era. I kept it weekly for one year and five months. It’s been so much fun. I already miss it.

Thank you very much. For everything.

(P.S. For anyone wondering if my fiance has coerced me to give up all my hopes and dreams to ride away with him on a white horse, I beg that you read this.)

Rachel,

^^ Congrats on everything, I have always loved your comics and I understand your decisions right now <3 I'll look forward to seeing your comics Bi-Monthly in May. Who knows? Maybe now that its your Hobby instead of your Job, you'll be able to put a more refreshed spark into it or something xD But, your work always WAS done with a passion, so thats why I loved it all this time :3. I shall be patient for its return as your Hobby! Good luck with Joe and everything <3.

Thank you Julia :) I hope that once it stops being my job, I can start putting more thought into the plotlines. It was beginning to feel a lot like writing a soap opera or a gag strip.

Thank you for hanging in there so long. I look forward to hearing what you think in May :)

I don't understand why you would ever feel like you've let us down!
Your comics have inspired and supported us and others, and what good would we be now if we didn't help inspire and support you!

Your in a time of need (financial, support, whatever, its still need!), and everything will lead to something good. Life is a struggling practice for balance. Im sure you'll be able to fit comics in there eventually!

Just because you are not able to create comics at the moment doesn't mean that your no longer a comicer! Your speaking as if you're never going to touch on the option ever again!

Everyone needs a break to better themselves, don't feel guilty doing so. I've found a friend in you, and im sure others feel the same way! If thats the deal, then we want YOU to be happy! I think we can deal with out your wonderful, gorgeous, inspiring comics for a little while while you get settled.

You've inspired me to do much more than create comics.

I just hope your able to give it one last HOORAH in April so I get a chance to work with ya!

<3

I still want to donate, and plan on it.. and I say shame on anyone who asks for their donation back.

Yes, I plan on learning Flash for good during this respite. And don't worry. I'm pretty sure I'm heading up to Philly. But, I'm probably only going for the weekend, not the week. But it will be so grand to see you and I hope we can do stuff when the con shuts down at night.

Wow you are moving fast!

I wasn't expecting you to hit Raleigh for another few months, but hey, Raleigh is fucking AWESOME!
Hopefully I'll be heading there in a bit over a year. But we will see.

Seriously though, Raleigh is a great place. There is SO much to do there. Just keep an eye out and you will have a great time! There are also a ton of places to live, so you two should eventually be able to find a place that has a very short commute to work. My friend Chris has a 10 min commute to work and his fiance has about a 25 min commute. It's really only bad if you live on the wrong side of Raleigh (relative to where your job is).

Keep us updated on how it goes!

PS. Taking my motorcycle class in May.

Yes, everything is indeed moving so fast!

Let me know if you wind up down there. We can hang out!

Good luck with the classes. I'm still trying to sell my bike ;)

Rachel,

To this day, I will never go back on what I said to you in your kitchen! "I am so very happy for the two of you!" I agree with anything and everything you want to go through with in your life............But................. in my heart I feel like I'm losing my best closest friend to distance. I want to cry. I never thought I would meet someone so unique and eccentric and have them actually leave their handprint on my heart. Rachel, you were the best friend I have been looking for in all my 21 years and I want you to continue to be so. I wish you the best with Joe. I plan to visit as often as my crappy car will allow, until I get my new one. You will be my Maid of Honor (er Matron, whatev) when I do get married. Possibly, godmother to my children. You are a wonderful person and you don't need your comics for anyone to realize that. Oh well, this is enough heart-pouring info for now. I'm getting off here to call you. I love you, Rachel Nabors Komenda. ; ).

Darn it, do you have to like, make the sweetest damn comments ever? *huggles* Sweetie, you've been the best friend I could ask for, and I'm going to miss you like crazy. Please come down sometime so I can take you to your first Sephora (save $75 prior).

I very much look forward to being your matron of honor, and I hope you can come to my wedding, too, whenever or wherever it might be!

I love you, too, Jamie. You're hard to move away from.

No worries, Rachel. =]
You aren't letting anyone down, I assure you. You've got your own life & your own situations to handle; you'll do what you can, when you can. There's no shame in that what-so-ever.
I don't have much to say, I don't know everything going on, but I wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors.
You’re still Rachel The Great to me, regardless of how many comics you make a month.

Fear not, you are not letting anyone down! You do what you need to do, and your supporting fans will always be here for you! You will always be one of the inspirations for me to actually post my humble comics online. Good luck to you!

(And that was my fail attempt to write something heartfelt...eh-heh)

Hey Rachel!

I've been reading your stuff for a while now and it helped me notice a number of things around me. I like the way you are observing people. I'm an observer as well. I truly admire you and I wish I could meet you one day, but I have an ocean to cross. :)

Well, I'd like for us to be friends, if not in real life, then online.

Till then, congratulations!
I hope the miracle will happen to me as well.
