1.First of all, please introduce the band for those who don't know you.
*We're called Where It Ends and we're from
Columbia, South Carolina in the USA. Paul, Anthony, Ryan and Derrick. 4 guys with no future.
2.Please tell me your all release.
*We put out a demo way back in 2004 which we'd like to forget but can't seem to get away from! We also did a little promotional 4 song thing that was a collection of 2 songs from 05 and 2 from 06. Other than that our first and only real release is the new one Resonate out on SA Mob.
3.Why did you choice SA MOB?
*I had been searching for a label to help us out for a while, and a lot of them seemed to really sketch out on us and kinda leave us in the dust. EMS got in touch with me and we ended up putting out this record and I wouldn't have wanted to put it out with anyone else. So i'm glad things worked out the way they did!
4.What are your inspirations for your band?(musiclly)
*I think as individuals we're all inspired by certain different bands and things. So I'm really bad at pinning down certain bands that inspire us all. Judge, Strife, Unbroken are some of the few.
5.Please tell me your HxCx scene around you.
*The hardcore scene in
Columbia, South Carolina is a very small scene. It's not the smallest scene in the world, but it's a hard time getting kids to come out to hardcore shows. Just a lot of broke kids and kids that don't really care to come out to shows, which is odd. But it is our hometown and for some reason no matter how bad we think a show is gonna be it always ends up being fun (for the most part). So in that respect Columbias not that bad. Especially because we dont have the usual drama and shit that goes along with other, larger scenes.
6.Are there bands who are on good terms with you.
*We've made a lot of friends over the years, some have faded away and disappeared and others still remain. We went out with
Die Young TX for a bit a few months ago and those are all cool dudes in my book and also a great band. There's also a lot of bands who probably think we're morons and that is just fine with us...because we are!
7.What's your favorite bands?(alltime 5 five bands and current 5 bands)
*I'll try and give you the best I can think of for my personal list. alltime 5: van halen, youth of today, bane, the smiths/morrissey, judge.
as for current: die young tx, foundation, new lows is pretty sweet from what i've heard, the first step. that's only 4 but I could barely think up that many, I honestly just haven't heard many bands this year that i've been into. Hopefully 08 will have more in store for my ears.
8.What are your inspirations for writing the songs?
*Life in general and the things I see and go through on any normal day. The things that go on around the world that could be changed if humanity wasn't getting slower by the year. Many things!
9.What do you know about
Japan?
Haha, not too much. I've never even visited outside of the US at all. All I know about
Japan is that there is apparently a ton of people there and
Godzilla. As for the Japanese hardcore scene, about the only thing I know if is Loyal to the Grave and FC5. Time to visit
Japan I guess!
10.What kind of messages you would like to spread with the band?
Just that hardcore can be about speaking your mind and sharing opinions on any subject just as much as it can be about having fun or wearing goofty hats and shoes. We are by no means smart or serious at all. But I think even if we decide to not go to school and not to be part of the "norm" that we can still make a small impact on the scene or the people around us that could make a ripple effect and resonate with the rest of the world.
12.Finaly your message for all the people!!!!
*Check out our EP "Resonate" on Sa Mob if you can. All anyone in this band wants to do is play music for the rest of our lives and nothing else, and we'd love to have someone to listen and play it to. Thanks for the interview!
Interview W/ yet another zine!
For the record, please state your name and what you do in the band.
I'm Paul and I do that thing with the microphone.
How would you describe Where it Ends to someone who has never heard you?
I usually would just say something about the music being "hard and fast" when describing to a non-core fellow. I usually keep it somewhat vague like that. But it's hard to describe it when I spend the most time trying to get people to pronounce the name correctly: "Where It Is?" "Were It Ends?"
How long has the band been together?
Well technically we started about the end of 03. So i'd say it's been around 5 years.
Where it Ends has gone through some member changes right? Are you an original member?
Me and Anthony (drums) are the only "original" members. There have been quite a few versions of WIE. We've been going pretty solid for a while now though, hopefully it can stay that way!
How has the sound of the band changed since you got together?
The sound has changed a good bit. When we started originally we were just a side project to our main band at the time and we had totally different dudes (minus me and Ant) and we weren't serious about it at all. We wrote some heavy, shitty songs with some shitty lyrics and put together a shitty "demo" that like 10 people wound up with. Then when our other band broke up we decided to get a bit more serious and wrote some songs with much emphasis on fast part/heavy part/melodic part. Then we recorded the 04 demo. Nowadays I think we've matured a lot more since then as have the lyrics. We like to get a flow going as opposed to pre-planning the song out and thinking about how people will react to the song at shows. When we look back on the demo and some of the songs after that...we dont really like them, haha. We still play them every now and then but I think we have more of a connection to the newer songs and that whole idea. I'm sure we'll get tired of a few of them just like everything else we do, but they definitely mean a lot to us.
How has the straight edge affected your life?
Well, as is probably much the same with anyone else who's been completely drug and alcohol free for any amount of time...it definitely affects your outlook on the majority of people around you and their outlook on you. If you dont do these sort of things in this day and age, then that makes you weird. People ask you questions because they wanna know whats going on in your crazy freakish mind because you dont get drunk or stoned. So in that way and a few others, straight edge AFFECTS my life. Other than that, it's just how I live...(nod to the demo!) It's how i've been my entire life, since before I knew what straight edge was..and it's how i'll continue to be until i'm buried, burned or frozen (hopefully the latter).
Since releasing Resonate in 2007, what have you been up to?
We've been attempting to play as many random shows as we possibly can. We've done a few tours, most recently heading out west to Texas, California and a bunch of other places we've never been. I think that was a big success and a big accomplishment for us. Trying to get the record or at least a good show out to as many people as we can. We dont make any money off this, we lose all of it and spend all our personal money. We have horrible luck. But we always try and will keep doing so, we will annoy until the bitter end!
What are your thoughts on government and politics?
It's all a lie. Everyone buys into it because it makes them feel safe, or like they're making a contribution. The voting system is a sham as is the entire political system. After everything that goes on in this country and outside of this country that our government and our leaders make happen, how we can trust the political system boggles my mind. Voting does nothing and will do nothing but make the voter feel safe, and they shouldn't feel safe. I 'll never understand how someone can place their faith in someone who they dont know any more than some actor on tv (they're ALL actors). This person can be anyone off the screen, but they're probably not the righteous go-getting genius leader they pretend to be on the screen. Fuck the vote 08.
Where do you see the band going in the future?
Just progressing naturally, writing better songs, hopefully a euro tour somewhere in there. We've been dreaming up a split lately but the other band is the part we haven't figured out yet. Keep an eye out though.
What bands have influenced you personally?
Youth of Today, Bane and Van Halen have all played a big part in my life amongst others. Anything that makes ya think must be good.
What are some of your favorite bands coming up right now?
I like what I've heard so far from New Lows and I wanna hear more. Advent from NC has a good thing going on. I'm honestly not into much stuff that i've heard lately, hopefully 08 has a lot to offer for me.
What is your favorite part of touring?
We all love touring. Hanging out with friends and meeting new people and making new friends. Acting like morons whenever and wherever we can and talking about the paranormal. Eating good food. Playing shows and feeling good.
Least favorite?
Being broke. Being really tired. Super long drives. Eating bad food. Going home.
If you could have 3 wishes, what would they be?
What a question! My first wish would be for WIE to become huge, like...Metallica status. 2nd wish to be immortal. 3rd wish is for infinite wishes. And if there's some rule against that then i'd like my 3rd wish to be that I can go back in time whenever I want, possibly in a DeLorean.
