As you know I am not one for sending out mass emails other than for the purposes of arranging to meet for drinks. But some of you may be aware that for the past year and a half I've been working on a documentary called Taking Liberties which charts the assault by New Labour on all of our basic freedoms - Freedom of Speech, Privacy, Presumption of Innocence and the Ban on Torture. It's made for cinema release and is deliberately coming out to coincide with Blair's departure. We've made it with one of the producers of Bowling for Columbine so it's also very tongue in cheek but still very British. We avoid the temptation to spend 90 minutes just Blair bashing, and instead follow the stories of normal people who have suffered injustice thanks to the War Against Terror. There is a piece on the ITV news on the film tonight and the film is being released across the UK on June 8th.
It's really important that as many people go to see it on the opening weekend as possible, as then the men in grey suits who control distribution will push it out to a lot more screens. I'm more surprised than anyone that the film has actually turned out really well - we've just been given our first 5 star review and Dazed and Confused have called it: "Bold, Fearless and Blackly Funny.... This vital film should be compulsory viewing."
I'm not exaggerating when I say that making this film is the most important thing I've ever done with my life (some might say the only important thing I've done in my life) and I urge you to put the weekend of June 8th in your diary - if you don't like the film I'll refund the ticket price.
