New Releases for February 3, 2009
Mike Bones - A Fool For Everyone CD/LP (Social Registry)
Features
contributions from Matt Sweeney and Douglas Armour as well as members
of Antony & The Johnsons, Sian Alice Group, Favourite Sons, and Jah
Division. "Bones is a guitar hero inside and out, master apprentice of
a steel-eyed, determined blues first informed by punk, not the sallow,
honeyed agony seeping out of our most emotionally isolated
singer-songwriters." -- Dusted
Cannibal Corpse - Evisceration Plague CD+DVD (Metal Blade) Death
metal legends return with their latest release, produced and mixed by
Eric Rutan (Hate Eternal, Malevolent Creation). Includes a 24-page
booklet and a bonus DVD featuring a "making of" feature and 60 minutes
of additional content.
Benjy Ferree - Come Back To The Five And Dime, Bobby Dee Bobby Dee CD (Domino) The
second full-length is a musical eulogy to the forgotten child star,
Bobby Driscoll. Drawing as much from the country meandering of Jimmie
Rodgers and the passionate blues pounding of Son House as he does from
the vocal hysterics of Freddie Mercury and the balladry of Nick Cave,
Ferree crafts a unique and gratifying sound.
The Fray - The Fray CD/LP (Sony) Nearly four years after their debut, The Fray returns with their sophomore effort.
Lisa Hannigan - Sea Sew CD (ATO) Debut album from the singer/songwriter. CD now, vinyl due in April.
Heartless Bastards - Mountain CD (Fat Possum) Heartless
Bastards' third full-length weaves in an adventurous sonic evolution,
expanding their three-piece rock by adding pedal steel, mandolin,
banjo, strings, and Erika's transcendent voice.
Ben Kweller - Changing Horses CD/LP (ATO) New album -- a straight up country charmer.
Ladyfinger (NE) - Dusk CD (Saddle Creek)
Nods
and winks to the past meet a sound of the not-too-distant future, and
with one foot in the sounds of early ‘70s classic rock and another in
the punk and hardcore scenes of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s,
Ladyfinger (NE) bring you Dusk.
Willie Nelson / Asleep At The Wheel - Willie & The Wheel CD/Deluxe CD (Bismeaux Productions) Jerry
Wexler's long-overdue concept album takes Willie Nelson back to his
musical roots. Teamed up with Ray Benson and the master musicianship of
Asleep At The Wheel, this instant classic celebrates the timeless
appeal of a most unique and spirited American music genre. Deluxe
package adds collector's postcards and stamps.
Newlydeads - Dreams From A Dirt Nap CD (Full Effect)
Taime
Downes career has been one long ride with the gas pedal pressed to the
floor. He hit the height of his commercial success in the early ‘90s
with his famously sleazy rock & roll band, Faster Pussycat. He now
returns with his latest group, Newlydeads.
The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart CD/LP (Slumberland) Since
forming in early 2007, The Pains of Being Pure At Heart have become one
of the most talked-about pop bands in years. Their distinctive style
tidily distills all the great noise-pop precedents (early My Bloody
Valentine, House of Love, Pale Saints, Rocketship) with incredible
exuberance and energy in every song. (Will's favorite record so far
this year)
Phantom Band - Checkmate Savage CD (Chemikal Underground)
With an invisible tongue firmly in cheek, this mysterious Pan Scottish sextet leans towards the dark side. Checkmate Savage
is where Captain Beefheart meets Bonnie Prince Billy -- where Neu!
meets Nick Cave. "When you have been playing together for a good while
you'd be amazed at the breadth of music you come up with. We ended up
playing stuff that was folk, pop, techno with guitars, classic rock,
metal, noise terrorism, gospel, soundscapes and parodied every band
that we hated as well -- it was great fun," says bassist Gerry of their
prolonged sessions.
Phosphorescent - To Willie CD/LP (Dead Oceans)
In 1975, Willie Nelson recorded To Lefty From Willie,
ten songs in which Nelson paid homage to Lefty Frizell, reinterpreting
his favorites from the Frizzell catalog and stamping them with his
unique voice. Now Phosphorescent has done the same for Willie Nelson on
this recording of eleven hidden Nelson gems and lost classics.
P.O.S. - Never Better CD (Rhymesayers)
The follow-up to 2006's Audition
enters a room like a bombshell, impossible to ignore. Feedback and
relentless drum rolls are only occasionally tempered by sung choruses
and clean, chiming guitar lines. With an unlikely punk rock past and a
growing hip-hop fan base, P.O.S. proves he's a rapper with range. The
initial pressing's limited edition artwork includes lyrics and
transparent digipak that holds sixteen solid and six transparent
inserts allowing the consumer to configure their own personalized cover
art.
Stigma (Agnostic Front) - New York Blood CD (I Scream) Vinnie
Stigma has been a pillar in the punk community since the early ‘80s
when he founded the legendary Agnostic Front. This is his first solo
record.
Wavves - Wavves CD (De Stijl) It's
interesting how a tune written by a 22-year old can evoke this boyish
reverie and reverence of thoughtful nostalgia. Listen between the
grooves and you'll hear it too. Wavves is the sound of today's American
youth.(Justin is going ape for this)
Young Dubliners - Saints & Sinners Rock CD (429 Records) Unique blend of rock and Celtic -- features the crowd pleasing "Rosie," and an explosive appearance by Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
Zombi - Spirit Animal Rock CD/LP (Relapse)
A
tour de force whose up-tempo moods, patented psychedelic poly-rhythms
and bouncing, lush interplay between men and machines usher in a
scintillating new era for the band. With an outpouring of genuine
emotion and melody, Spirit Animal gives instrumental
music the punch in the gut it needed by blending a genuine sense of
warmth and emotion with the darkness the band is heralded for.
Simply The Rest...
Petula Clark - Open Your Heart: A Love Song Collection CD (Collector's Choice)
A 21-song collection of largely unreleased love songs.
Diplo - Decent Work For Decent Pay Vol. 1 2xCD (Big Dada)
This provides an overview of what he has been up to for the last four years, starting with classic tracks and out-takes from Florida, taking in production work on such huge records as M.I.A.'s Paper Planes, Kano's Reload It,
and Bonde Do Role's album for Domino, plus a host of remixes for the
likes of CSS, Spank Rock, Bloc Party, Hot Chip, Black Lips, and Peter,
Bjorn & John.
The Reissue zone...
Caroline Peyton - Intuition CD (Asterisk) Issued
in 1977, the ten-song album has been expanded to seventeen, including
two studio outtakes and five demos recorded for Arista. The booklet
features a dozen candid photos from the period and Edd Hurt's account
of Caroline's final days as an outsider folk goddess. "A middle road
between Buffy Sainte-Marie's electro-augmented Illuminations and Nick Drake's Pink Moon." -- Pitchfork
Caroline Peyton - Mock Up CD (Asterisk)
Issued in 1972, the ten-song album has been expanded to fourteen, including her three vocal cuts on the Screaming Gypsy Bandits In The Eye
LP. Dug up in the process was a live performance at the Hummingbird
Café in 1972 captured on film, which has been added as enhanced content
on the CD. In addition to scores of unpublished photos, the booklet is
jammed full of Edd Hurt's detailed liner notes that document not only
the making of Mock Up, but also the Bloomington, Indiana scene of the 1970s.
Zero Boys - History Of CD/LP (Secretly Canadian) Zero Boys - Vicious Circle CDLP (Secretly Canadian)
Two long awaited reissues from Indianapolis-based Zero Boys. History Of has been remastered from the original tapes. Liner notes by Jack Rabid. Between this and Vicious Circle,
the entire recorded output of this legendary Midwest punk band's
original line up is finally collected. (in-store play favorite)
Isley Brothers - Smooth Sailin' CD (Rhino Flashback)
Ministry - Filth Pig CD (Rhino Flashback) Morrissey - Southpaw Grammar CD (Rhino Flashback)
Otis Redding - Live In Europe CD (Rhino Flashback)

K.D. Lang - Live With The BBC Orchestra DVD (Image)
Accompanied
the BBC Concert Orchestra, K.D. Lang delivers unforgettable versions of
timeless songs in this performance that was filmed at St. Luke's church
in London. Includes "I Dream Of Spring," "Wash Me Clean," "Smoke
Rings," a cover of "Hallelujah" and more.
The Vinyl zone...
R.L. Burnside - Ass Pocket Of Whiskey LP (Fat Possum) Available once again on vinyl for the first time in six years!
Brian Eno / David Byrne - My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts LP (Nonesuch) Updated
HQ-180 double LP -- fully remastered with seven additional tracks from
the original recording sessions and six multi-track selections.
Maserati / Zombi - Split LP (Temporary Residence) Long
in the making, this split LP finally brings together two similarly
influenced and equally provocative groups: Athens, GA's Maserati --
with their eternally driving, Krautrock-infused dance anthems -- shares
the record with Pittsburgh's favorite Italo-cinema fetishists, Zombi.
The marriage of these two bands couldn't be more perfect, and the
inspiration they have brought each other is evident in both the
creative exploration and the superior quality of the tracks. Rather
that deliver non-album toss-offs, both groups brought top-shelf
a-sides, making this split an essential part of each artist's already
rich catalog.
Minor Threat - Out Of Step LP+MP3 (Dischord)
Minor Threat - Minor Threat LP+MP3 (Dischord)
Classic albums remastered and re-released with a digital download coupon inside.
My Chemical Romance - I Brought You My Bullets: You Brought Me Your Love LP (Eyeball) Their debut, originally released in 2002, now available for the first time on vinyl.
Outclassed - This Might Be Coincidence LP+CD (Forcefield) This
Pittsburgh five piece keeps a feverish pace and follows a decidedly
schizophrenic, non-linear path. Writhing, sinuous guitars slice through
layers of distortion and feedback while the off-kilter stomp of the
rhythm section spews frenetic beats in every direction. One-sided
12-inch plus CD packaged in gatefold sleeves.
Ratatat - Mirando 12" (XL) Brand new single from LP3 features a Yacht remix as well as a remix by Animal Collective.
Various Artists - I Woke Up One Morning In May LP (Mississippi) A sequel to Mississippi's Last Kind Words
compilation -- a collection of all country blues recorded between
1927-1934. Featuring favorites such as Memphis Minnie, Lottie Kimbrough
and Robert Wilkins, this slab also has a few obscurities like Little
Hat Jones and Louie Lasky. Fourteen songs -- all classics.
Antony & The Johnsons - Crying Light LP+MP3 (Secretly Canadian) Andrew Bird - Noble Beast 2xLP (Fat Possum)
Fear - Record LP (Rhino)
Fiction Family - Fiction Family LP+CD (ATO)

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post
Pavilion
Merriweather Post Pavilion is their ninth full-length.
The whoops and hollers that previously held together the sublime, chaotic
urgency of their earlier work now signal the calm sense of euphoria and wonder
that ripples through this wide eyed record.
Antony
& The Johnsons - Crying Light
"The Crying Light" is the highly anticipated
full-length follow-up to "I Am a Bird Now". Here, Antony shifts the thematic focus and explores
his relationship with the natural world. Antony and the Johnsons have created a subtle
and timely work that brings a magical and yet changing world to the forefront
of our consciousness.
Omar Rodriguez Lopez - Old Money
Omar Rodriguez Lopez's Old Money is the first album that
The Mars Volta guitarist/producer/writer/..arranger will release with Stones

recordings, and the perfect entry point to anyone not yet familiar with what
this prolific artist has to offer.
Andrew Bird - Noble Beast
Swiftly picking up in popularity with his 5th
album The Mysterious Production of Eggs, Andrew Bird then signed with
Fat Possum Records for his 2007 highly anticipated follow-up record Armchair
Apocrypha and working hard throughout the year managed to more than double
his album sales, live ticket sales, promotion & media coverage etc. Now he
stands poised with a well established sales history, critical anticipation, and
consumer enthusiasm.
