New Releases for March 24, 2009

1900s - Kicks
CD/LP (Rough Trade)

The
follow-up to the acclaimed Cookies features more sassy, infectiously
catchy songs about Glasgow and girls in the main. "...crafting catchy jams
that alternate between anthemic pop and tightly wound punk." -- Rolling
Stone

Amadou
& Mariam
- Welcome To Mali CD (Nonesuch)

Recorded in Bamako, Dakar, Paris
and London, Welcome
To Mali
is less high-concept travelogue
than straightforward set, yet it proves to be even more adventurous and
exuberantly rocking. Damon Albarn briefly joins the pair, co-producing and
co-writing opening track "Sabali" as ingeniously arranged as the best
of his work with the Gorillaz and featuring Mariam’s almost otherworldly vocals
over swirls of disco-style keyboards.

Sarah
Borges & Broken Singles
- The Stars Are Out CD (Suburban Home)

Produced by Paul Q. Kolderie
(Radiohead, Lemonheads, Juliana Hatfield), The
Stars Are Out
is a fiery (NY Times) ten-song collection of five originals
and five choice re-imaginations of Borges favorites.

Condo
F**ks (Yo La Tengo)
- F**kbook CD/LP (Matador)

This
New London, CT trio tear through classic covers of Small Faces, Richard Hell,
Beach Boys, Electric Eels, Troggs, Slade, and Flaming Groovies in the style
that previously won them so much acclaim. "Condo F**ks are everything that
rock music lacks today... rock 'n' roll for this generation without destroying
the legendary past." -- Connecticut Post

Dan
Deacon
- Bromst CD/LP (Carpark)

Unlike the completely electronic Spiderman Of The Rings, the
instrumentation on Bromst is a
mixture of acoustic and mechanical instruments, samples, and electronics. The
intricate and complex parts are woven together into a rich, dense, and noisy
dance pop that has become Deacon's signature sound.

The
Decemberists
- The Hazards Of Love CD (Capitol)

The Hazards Of Love
tells the tale of a woman named Margaret who is ravaged by a shape-shifting
animal; her lover, William; a forest queen; and a cold-blooded, lascivious
rake. Lavender Diamonds Becky Stark and My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Worden
deliver the lead vocals for the female characters, while My Morning Jacket’s
Jim James, Robyn Hitchcock, and the Spinanes’ Rebecca Gates appear in
supporting roles.

Dirty
Projectors
- Beyond Uquafina CDEP/12” (Domino)

Features
the B-side "The Bride" and a Lucky Dragons remix.

Pete
Doherty
- Grace / Wastelands CD/CD+DVD (Astralwerks)

Libertines/Babyshambles singer/songwriter goes solo.
Deluxe version includes a 16-page booklet and DVD featuring 40 minutes of
interviews and studio footage.

Doom - Born
Like This CD/LP (Lex)

His first full-length solo project
in four years is filled with superstar guests including J Dilla, Dangermouse,
Ghostface and Raekwon.

Harlem
Shakes
- Technicolor Health CD (Gigantic)

After extensive touring and a bit of schooling, the Harlem
Shakes got together with Chris Zane (The Walkmen, Passion Pit) to record their
debut full-length album, Technicolor
Health
.

Indigo
Girls
- Poseidon And The Bitter Bug CD/2xCD (Vanguard)

Deluxe edition includes an extra
disc of acoustic sessions and a bonus (non-album) track.

Jeremy
Jay
- Slow Dance CD/LP (K)

Slow Dance starts with a bang. It
navigates listeners through forests and over star streams as easily as walking
through the streets, before it shifts to dance floor romance and night-time
escapades. There is a consistent, mysterious sway; a strong will backed by
noble guitars and shiny synths. Amidst, Jay is protective and candid, inviting
listeners to dance with a whisper. A romance of dreams and realities, full
colors, ice skates, and disco lights.

KMFDM - Blitz
CD (Metropolis)

Under
the direction of founder, leader, and vocalist Sascha K., Blitz is
dominated by analogue synthetics with high-powered hooks, singer Lucia lends
her vocal power, and the tracks are rounded out by some assistance from the
KMFDM line-up of the last half decade: Jules Hodgson, Andy Selway, and Steve
White.

Mastodon - Crack
The Skye CD/CD+DVD (Reprise)

Mastodon’s fourth original studio
album mines subject matter from czarist Russia and astral travel to out-of-body
experiences and Stephen Hawking’s theories on wormholes for an unrepentantly
heavy aural assault that will shake the heavens. Deluxe edition includes a
DVD featuring the “The Making Of Crack
The Skye
,” track-by-track commentary from the band, a photo gallery and
more.

Merzbow - 13
Japanese Birds, Volume 3 CD (Important)

The third in Merzbow’s 13-month series of releases
inspired by Olivier Messaien's Catalogue
D'Oiseaux
.

Mono - Hymn
To The Immortal Wind CD/2xLP (Temporary Residence)

Mono's
fifth studio album -- written and arranged with a hopeful, romantic narrative
in mind -- is naturally majestic, with their trademark wall of noise crashing
beautifully against the largest chamber orchestra the band has ever enlisted.
The instrumentation is vast, incorporating strings, flutes, organ, piano,
glockenspiel, and tympani into their standard set up.

MSTRKRFT - Fist
Of God CD/LP (Downtown)

The long-awaited sophomore album from the electronic/dance
duo feature Jesse Keeler (formerly of Death From Above 1979) and Al-P.

MXPX - On The
Cover II CD (Tooth & Nail)

'80-themed covers album, including tracks originally by Go
Go's, U2, Poison and Belinda Carlisle, among others.

O+S - O+S
CD/LP (Saddle Creek)

The
collaboration between Orenda Fink (Azure Ray, Art In Manila) and Scalpelist
(a.k.a. Cedric LeMoyne of Remy Zero) has yielded a beautifully haunting
collection, influenced by David Lynch soundtracks, 10cc, and 4AD. It's a
balance of light and dark; a melodious reverie that thrusts forward with drum
loops, shifts from acoustic guitar and angelic coos to plodding piano and
tinkling bells, and floats with celestial vocals.

Obits - I
Blame You CD/LP (Sub Pop)

Brooklyn's
Obits are Rick Froberg (Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu, Pitchfork), Sohrab
Habibion, Greg Simpson, and Scott Gursky.

Rafter - 10
Songs CD/LP (Asthmatic Kitty)

This
pop gem has been buried in the rough since 1998, and marks the first time
Rafter's debut has been available for retail. It's an album to lose your way
in, headphones pumping, toes tapping, and mind swimming in the rich environs
authored by a persevering love-seeking dude.

Royksopp -
Junior CD/LP (Astralwerks)

One of the most celebrated and
innovative artists in the electronic genre, Norway’s Royksopp return with the
highly anticipated follow-up to their classic debut Melody A.M. Featuring a team of top female vocalists/ collaborators
including Swedish superstar Robyn, Lykke Li, Karin Dreijer (The Knife) as well
as fellow Norwegian Anneli Drecker.

Swan
Lake
- Enemy Mine CD/LP+MP3 (Jagjaguwar)

Swan
Lake is the musical collaboration of Daniel Bejar (Destroyer, New
Pornographers), Spencer Krug (Sunset Rubdown, Wolf Parade), and Carey Mercer
(Frog Eyes, Blackout Beach). While their debut was a beautifully weaved mash up
of disparate songwriting styles, this second effort reflects a more stripped
down, deliberate approach to collaboration. Vinyl LP contains digital download
coupon.

The
Vines
- Melodia CD (Caroline)

Domestic pressing of the 2008 album from the Australian
alterna-rockers -- their fourth album overall.

Simply The Rest…

Fridge - Early
Output 1996-1998 CD (Temporary Residence)

Fridge's
music playfully skated all over the musical map, jumping from bashing lo-fi
punk to sublime expanses of downtempo dance with equal enthusiasm. With their
label (Output Recordings) now defunct, and Fridge having spawned no less than
three successful side projects (Four Tet, Adem, and Kieran Hebden's
collaborations with jazz legend Steve Reid), it was time to release a
band-curated collection of their most memorable tracks from those wildly
prolific years. Also includes six previously unreleased tracks from that era.
Re-mastered, with photos and extensive liner notes from friends, collaborators,
and the band.

Hawkwind - Text Of Festival CD
(Candlelight)

Recordings
from their first ever BBC sessions recorded in 1970-71, and live material from
Colchester 1971.

Bettye
Lavette
- Do Your Duty CD (Sundazed)

Collected here are all of the
sizzling Silver Fox label recordings. Sporting eye catching retro artwork and
spectacular sound quality from the original stereo masters, here's the Bettye
LaVette collection that we've patiently been waiting for, featuring her bawdy
R&B hits "He Made A Woman Out Of Me" and "Do Your
Duty".

Moby
Grape

- The Place And The Time CD/LP (Sundazed
Music)

tracks cut during Moby Grape’s 1967-1968 heyday -- encompassing audition

FULL TILT BOOGIE

Each month
we highlight five new releases in the store. All five of these titles
are featured on a special Guestroom listening station where you can
preview them in their entirety. Please drop by to sample these fine new
releases.

M.Ward*Hold Time

Although he's been compared to everyone from John Fahey to Tom Waits to
Howe Gelb, with "Hold Time", it's clear that M. Ward, with his
brilliant guitar playing and innate sense of melody, is one of those
rare and special talents who defy comparison and compartmentalization.
His deft guitar picking, bar room piano, and voice like drizzled honey
make him a huge favorite of music critics and the focus of public
praise from such disparate talents as Norah Jones and Oasis' Noel
Gallagher.

Mishka*Above The Bones

j.k. livin, Matthew McConaughey's new label, is proud to announce its
first artist, Mishka. With his roots in the Caribbean and his magnetism
towards reggae, Mishka's soulful debut album, Above the Bones, is sure
to keep everyone listening.

And They Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead*The Century Self

The Century of Self is epic, and was clearly made without the gimlet
eye of a major label A&R person overseeing it. The record is a work
of tremendous scope and ambition. The album was produced and mixed by
Chris Coady (TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Grizzly Bear) featuring
vocal contributions from Yeasayer and Dragons of Zynth. Trail of Dead's
sixth full-length is a return to their indie roots.

Cazals*What of Our Future?

London based Cazals expose their futuristic guitar-dance-pop with their
first full-length What Of Our Future. Released in the US through The
Hours, the album features the heavily re-mixed single "Somebody,
Somewhere". Signed to French electronic music label Kitsune, home of
Simian Mobile Disco, Crystal Castles, and other such forward thinkers,
Cazals have received praise as one of the most exciting British bands
around. "Wrapped in bright guitars and slick synths, every track boasts
an arresting touch" - SPIN

Morrissey*Years of Refusal

"Morrissey isn't just any singer: he has become one of the defining
rock stars of the past few decades" -New York Times "He's the light
that never goes out." <<<<-SPIN "Morrissey is a modern-day
legend and deserves all eyes and ears to be upon him" -Filter "This might be his best solo effort in at least ten years" -Will
